Merritt Digital Preservation Repository – April 2023
Merritt is a digital preservation repository from the University of California Curation Center (UC3) that enables the UC community to manage, archive, and share its valuable digital content.
Welcome to the Merritt service update for April 2023
New Content and Collections
The COVID Tracking Project Archive at UCSF
Over the past two months our team has been collaborating with UCSF Archives & Special Collections to manage the ingest of the COVID Tracking Project (CTP) Archive into Merritt. The CTP was “a volunteer organization launched from The Atlantic and dedicated to collecting and publishing the data required to understand the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States.” Alongside the wealth of data from the CTP that has been made openly accessible through Dryad, we are now pleased to say the born digital content captured and created by the project will reside in an associated Merritt collection. We look forward to our continued work with UCSF to ensure the completion of this collection in the upcoming months.
Digital Preservation Community
Nearly all digital preservation repository platforms, including Merritt, reference the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model. The latest version of the model is now undergoing its periodic review by ISO. As in the past, this revision was brought forth by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS), from which the OAIS originates. Notably, OAIS plays a major role in ISO 16363, one of a limited number of audit standards purposed to certify the trustworthiness of digital preservation repositories.

As mentioned in the March update, the Library of Congress held its annual Designing Storage Architectures meeting on March 27-28. Presentations from the meeting are now available.
What We’re Working On
The Merritt team has authored a post on its recent CoreTrustSeal certification!

As part of our collaboration with UCSF on the CTP Archive, we have worked to enable the direct download of content from BOX to a staging area where it can then be ingested into Merritt. We have an initial implementation in place that is enabling us to download a significant number of images that will then be compressed and associated with metadata for ingest.
