Highlights on Other Activities:

  • Staffing news:
    • Jason Chodur joined SCP as the Metadata and Extraction, Transformation, & Loading Specialist. In his new role, Jason has primary responsibility for electronic collection cataloging management, including but not limited to determining and employing effective strategies to analyze, extract, manipulate, transform, and load large-scale data for bibliographic and inventory records of CDL managed electronic resources. Please read the CDL announcement for details. Welcome Jason!
    • SCP, as part of CDL Shared Collection Program, participated in the program-wide staff meetings welcoming Miranda Bennett, our new Program Director, on board.
  • SCP catalogers have been busy cataloging new collections in addition to the ongoing collections:
    • Newsbank Hispanic American Newspapers (complete: collection & portfolios)
    • Gale. China and the Modern World: Missionary, Sinology, and Literary Periodicals, 1817–1949 (complete: collection & portfolios)
    • ProQuest History Vault (complete: all at collection level)
    • ProQuest Historical Newspapers (about to start)
    • Picture Gallery of Chinese Modern Literature (1833~1949) Series 1-5 (Complete: collection. No portfolios)
  • Kate Garvey-Clasby is working with other ERT members on the post-migration reconciliation project, currently on identifying the gap between NZ and CDL IZ for Springer and CRC ebook collections.
  • Cleanup standalone portfolios SCP migrated: SCP has completed the cleanup of majority of standalone portfolios (5500+, has about 50 to finish)
  • Testing CJK languages in Sandbox after reindexing (Bie-hwa): This was one of the collective efforts of the informal group, UC CJK Alma Discussion Group formed at the end of August 2022. The NZ Sandbox and IZ Sandbox in UCLA and UCSD were tested. The results showed that the reindexing resolved the variants mapping issues with Chinese and Japanese except for a few missing mappings, for example, crossmapping between 宁 & 甯. The results for Korean variants showed that no mapping was done between Hangul and Hanja. According to the results recorded in the Group Google sheet (primarily designed by TJ Kao of UC Davis) and the group discussion, we need more volunteers for testing on Korean words, missing mappings, as well as issues in non one-on-one mappings between Chinese traditional and simplified variants. An email invitation has been forwarded to the chair of UC EAS CKG for promoting more participation.
    • CDL PID service: The current software running the PID service is old and may not be compatible with newer versions of MySQL and AWS. One option we’re considering is “freezing” the service so all current PIDs continue to work but no longer supporting new or updated PIDs.  However, before making any changes, CDL wants to make sure it understands how the software is currently being used by all stakeholders. SCP has not created any new PIDs since the SILS migration. The majority of CDL-managed resources are CZ activated and access is maintained by Ex Libris Community Zone. SCP still has some collections managed locally using PIDs. SCP is also looking at whether we can use Alma Portfolios to replace these PIDs with their native URLs and maintain access, the scope of the cleanup project, etc. SCP-AC members and SILS RM-COMS members are notified for the potential upcoming change. Please send any questions/concerns you may have to Gem Stone-Logan <Gem.Stone-Logan@ucop.edu>and Shi Deng.

Report an Alma/Primo VE problem: This page outlines how and when campuses should report access issues to CDL. This page can be found under CDL’s Report a Problem page under “Report a SILS (Alma or Primo VE) Problem”.
