Historical Newspapers Online and Palmer’s Index to the Times
Earlier in 2024, ProQuest sunset the Chadwyck-Healey database titled Historical Newspapers Online and Palmer’s Index to the Times, previously found at http://historynews.chadwyck.com. Over the years, ProQuest has worked to migrate databases found on the Chadwyck-Healey platform over to the main ProQuest platform; however, they chose not to migrate this database. This was a UC purchased database, with access for all UCs, and it has taken time to work with the vendor to determine what would happen to our purchased electronic resource content.
This database historically consisted of four parts:
- Historical Index to the New York Times. 1851-1923
- Official Index to the Times, 1906-1980
- Palmer’s Index to the Times, 1790-1905
- Palmer’s Full Image. (Times). 1785-1870
This content has been split up and can be found across various resources:
Historical Index to the New York Times. 1851-1923
CDL, on behalf of all UCs, already owns and provided access to the Historical New York Times, although this did not include the index content. ProQuest has upgraded our ownership of this database to another version titled HNP The New York Times with Index for all UCs. The URL for this database is https://www.proquest.com/hnpnewyorktimeswindex/advanced/, which redirects to the URL of the previous version of the ProQuest database (https://www.proquest.com/hnpnewyorktimes/advanced/) – both URLs should work for UC users and users will now see their access at ProQuest uses the new database name, ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The New York Times with Index.
Official Index to the Times, 1906-1980
ProQuest has not moved this content into another ProQuest database at this time, and has no timeline or definite plans for doing so. However, this content is freely available online at https://lt.cits.flvc.org/lt.jsp
Palmer’s Index to the Times, 1790-1905 and Palmer’s Full Image. (Times). 1785-1870
This content can be found in the ProQuest database C19: The Nineteenth Century Index, at https://www.proquest.com/c19index/advanced, which is owned by all UCs. Note that the previous database at the Chadwyck-Healey site indicated that the full text images for Palmer’s were closer to 1800-1870 in terms of complete published content, which also matches the description at the C19 database.
