Mary Ann Liebert Moves to Sage

Mary Ann Liebert Logo

Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. was acquired by Sage at the end of 2024 (see announcement). As part of the acquisition, Mary Ann Liebert titles are now moving to the Sage platform, and journals will remain under the Mary Ann Liebert name. Additionally, some existing Sage journals may appear under the Mary Ann Liebert imprint at the Sage platform as well.

Beginning in January 2026, dual access for Mary Ann Liebert journals began at the Sage platform. Dual access runs through the end of March 2026, at which point Mary Ann Liebert URLs will redirect to the journal title at the Sage platform. The Sage platform should be familiar to all UC users, as we have a systemwide package of Sage journals already.

Access to the Mary Ann Liebert titles at the Sage platform can be found at:

https://journals.sagepub.com/

More information for library staff about the MAL to Sage migration can be found at:

CDL staff continue to monitor this migration, any access & holdings issues that arise, and are working to update collections in the Alma catalog.

What does this mean for our Tier 2 MAL journal package?  How does this impact the UC’s Tier 1 Sage journal package?

The UCs have an ongoing Tier 2 journal package of Mary Ann Liebert titles, with a multiyear agreement from 2025-2027. The current participating campuses are: UCD; UCI; UCLA; UCR; UCSD; and UCSF. However, all UCs have some level of perpetual access holdings through previous participation in the package, including the purchase of the Mary Ann Liebert Legacy Collection (the archive collection purchased in 2010). Some campuses have additional tier 3 subscriptions & coverage as well.

The Mary Ann Liebert subscription is not moving into the UC’s Tier 1 Sage journal package for 2026, and will remain a separate package at this time. CDL will keep campuses informed through regular channels if and when there are changes to our Tier 2 Mary Ann Liebert journal package, as it relates to our Sage journal package.  As the collection is not part of our Sage transformative agreement, these titles are not eligible for support for open access publishing under the Sage agreement at this time. UC corresponding authors can use JOLT to confirm publishing support at the journal title level. Again, CDL will keep campuses updated when anything changes.

The Tier 2 Coordinator for Mary Ann Liebert journals is Dave Schmidt, UCSD. Please reach out to the Tier 2 Coordinator or CDL directly with questions about MAL titles or this migration to Sage. Please report any issues you encounter with access to CDL Helpline.
