New Licensed Resource: Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS)
As an end-of-year acquisition, CDL purchased the Foreign Broadcast Information Service, 1941-1996, from Readex on behalf of all campuses, with a start date of July 1, 2013.
The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Daily Report has been the United States’ principal historical record of political open source intelligence for more than half a century. The original mission of the FBIS was to monitor, record, transcribe and translate intercepted radio broadcasts from foreign governments, official news services, and clandestine broadcasts from occupied territories. Providing a wealth of information from all countries outside of the U.S.—from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, the FBIS Daily Reports are an indispensable source for insights into decades of turbulent world history.
This important resource has been requested for multiple years and was a top priority for five bib groups in the JSC annual survey in 2013: GILS, News, Sociology, Political Science, and US/UK History and Women’s Studies.
In order to accommodate CDL’s end of year funds, excluded content are FBIS Annexes and the Western European regional broadcasts. The Western European region was the smallest collection of intelligence gathering during this timeframe since these countries were Allies. Bib groups agreed to the exclusions in CDL’s purchase.
