July-August 2010 Vendor Transitions

Does your favorite resource look different?  Many of our licensed resources have undergone (or are about to undergo) changes due to interface upgrades or transitions to another publishing platform or vendor platform.

The following resources have either already changed or are about to change.  Please note the upcoming changes to EBSCOhost, scheduled for August 4th, and to the Wiley Online Library, scheduled for August 7-8th, as these two platforms represent a number of licensed resources.

July 1, 2010 — EconLit (Transition from OvidSP to ProQuest/CSA Illumina)

EconLit (formerly on OvidSP) moved to ProQuest/CSA on July 1, 2010.  This change was made because UC bibliographers decided that the CSA Illumina platform was better suited to the EconLit content and provided superior searching and display features.  Further information on this resource is available from the EconLit Resource Liaison, Jim Church (jchurch@library.berkeley.edu).

July 1, 2010 — FIAF (Transition from OvidSP to ProQuest/Chadwyck-Healey)

FIAF (formerly on OvidSP) moved to ProQuest/Chadwyck-Healey on July 1, 2010.  This change was made because UC bibliographers decided that the Chadwyck-Healey interface was an improvement over previous interface functionality.  Further information on this resource is available from the FIAF Resource Liaison, Gary Handman (ghandman@library.berkeley.edu).

July 1, 2010 — World Bank Databases (Interface switch from licensed version to Open Access)

As of July 1st, four of the World Bank databases that previously were restricted to several campuses as part of the World Bank e-Library license are now freely available. The databases include Africa Development Indicators, Global Development Finance, World Development Indicators (WDI), and World Bank Worldwide Development Indicators.  The PIDs for these resources have already been updated to go to the new URLs.

July 26 (week of) 2010 — New England Journal of Medicine [NEJM] (Transition to new publishing platform/Interface upgrade)
During the week of July 26th, the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM.org) will launch its new website hosted on the Atypon publishing platform (http://www.atypon.com/).  Automatic redirects to the new platform will be in place.  Some of new features include:

  • Enhanced page design and navigation
  • Personalized My NEJM account
  • Specialty Pages
  • New search tools
  • Archives back to 1812
  • Intuitive article format

End of July 2010 — Economist Intelligence Unit [EIU] (Interface upgrade)

At the end of July (date TBA), EIU databases will be restructured to improve and simplify searching.   Some of the new features include:

  • A new homepage featuring “My countries” and “My reports” dropdown menus
  • New country pages will include snippets of the latest analysis; ratings, rankings and key indicators provide an immediate visual snapshot for each country
  • Quicker navigation across topics covered in different reports
  • The new article page will include immediate access to other pieces of content within the same sub-category
  • The size of text on screen will be easily adjustable for more comfortable viewing

The EIU database URLs will not change with this interface upgrade and no campus actions are required for implementation.

August 2, 2010 — OVID/SP (LWW) (Interface upgrade)

Interface enhancements coming at the beginning of August 2010 include:

  • New Work Productivity Tools
    New search filters, a “widget” approach to results management, and numerous new citation management options, and more.
  • My Workspace
    Create work projects and organize all of your research materials — individual articles, search strategies, images, and more — into a dedicated area.
  • Ovid Toolbar
    This downloadable tool lets you quickly and easily save critical research material to My Workspace while you’re working outside OvidSP.
  • Additional Interface Display Enhancements
    A new main search page design for more effective search and browse navigation, “drag-and-drop” customization features, consolidation of features and pages, and more.

August 4, 2010 — EBSCOhost (Interface upgrade)

August 7, 2010 — LexisNexis Academic (Interface upgrade)

Interface enhancements coming at the beginning of August 2010 include:

The navigation system has been transformed so that all options are presented in a single menu at the left of the screen. Clicking on heading such as “News” or “US Legal” will cause the section below it to expand and reveal navigation options.

The most dramatic change is the home page for LexisNexis Academic, the Easy Search form. It has been redesigned to provide quick access to the most commonly used content. Follow the link below for information on the changes to this form.

August 7 (week of) 2010 – SpringerLink (Interface upgrade)

Interface enhancements coming at the beginning of August 2010 include:

  • Related documents for articles
  • PDF Preview for eBook chapters
  • Enhanced browsing features
  • Viewable abstracts without leaving search results
  • Improved search functionality – including searching by citation
  • Easy filters for Online first and Open access articles

The SpringerLink URLs will not change with this interface upgrade and no campus actions are required for implementation.  Further information on this resource is available is available from the Springer Resource Liaison, Karl Kocher (kakocher@ucdavis.edu).

August 8, 2010 — Wiley Online Library (Transition combining Wiley InterScience & former Blackwell Publishers content on a single platform)

Wiley InterScience will be unavailable beginning Saturday, August 7th at 1:00 AM PDT.  The new Wiley Online Library will go live on Sunday, August 8th at 9:00 AM PDT.

Although this transition requires changes to the existing resource URLs, re-directs will be in place and all content should be available once the downtime has been completed and the new site launched.  Theoretically, this transition should be invisible to UC users.

August 2010 — AccessEngineering (Interface upgrade)

AccessEngineering 2.0 will feature a number of customer-requested enhancements including:

  • A new user interface offering a streamlined, easy-to-navigate design and superior functionality
  • The addition of a new subject category: Software Engineering
  • Multimedia resources are being added to include instructor ancillaries, PowerPoint presentations, videos, podcasts, and more
  • Articles from McGraw-Hill’s Engineering News-Record (ENR) covering Environment, Water, Power, and Infrastructure; new articles will be posted weekly, and approximately 500 articles will be archived and available immediately
  • An Image Bank of four-color images, which will be updated monthly
  • Full author biographies
  • The complete contents of the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Science and Technology, offering more than 50,000 terms
