New Resources Available

a. Royal Society of Chemistry Archive

By Cory Craig (UC Davis), Resource Liaison

All UC campuses now have access to the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Archive of journals published from 1841-1996.  Online access to the RSC journals is available at: http://www.rsc.org/is/journals/j1.htm

Previously, only recent years were available online, and each campus relied on its own print subscriptions to various RSC journals.

The archive features full-text searching and includes approximately 200,000 articles (1.2 million pages).  A complete list of journals included in the RSC archive (including title changes and years of coverage) is available at: http://www.rsc.org/pdf/journals/archive/journals.pdf

The one-time purchase cost for the archive was paid by the CDL; campuses will pay a modest annual access fee.

b. Wiley Backfile Collections

By Jeff Williams (UC San Diego), Resource Liaison

The CDL has recently acquired three significant journal backfile collections from Wiley InterScience in the areas of biotechnology, chemistry, and polymer science.  The collections were acquired based on the recommendation of the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC) and the approval of the Collection Development Committee (CDC).

The three backfiles encompass more than 1.5 million pages.

  • The Angewandte Chemie International Edition backfiles from 1962-1997.  More information is available at: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/collectionhome/AGCOL/HOME
  • The Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics backfiles. More information is available at: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/collectionhome/BTCOL/HOME
  • The Polymer backfiles.  More information is available at: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/collectionhome/PBCOL/HOME

The CDL purchased perpetual rights to the Wiley backfiles with one-time funding on behalf of all UC libraries and future students.  Another backfile, General Chemistry, is due to be acquired latter this year and will become part of the UC collection.

Catalog records for individual titles in the wiley backfile will be distributed by shared cataloging to all campuses.
