ABC-CLIO Adds Value to America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts (Ellen Broidy, UCLA)
On September 4, 2001, ABC-CLIO migrated users of America: History and Life (AHL) and Historical Abstracts (HA) to a version 3 of the site. The new version includes a number of changes and enhancements. The most significant change and the one that all users will encounter upon entering the site is the new “simple search” default screen. This screen prompts users to search keyword and one additional field. The former multi-option default screen is still available and is now named Advanced Search.
In addition to the new default screen, ABC-CLIO has added several other noteworthy features:
- CLIO-Alert, a notification service to individual users that permits the establishment of up to ten searches which are run against new records monthly.
- Search criteria will be highlighted in Full Record Displays.
- All subject terms in the Full Record Display will be hyperlinked. When you select a term, the system will conduct a new search using that term.
- CLIO Notes, a feature that allows the user to browse through chronologies and hundreds of brief summaries of significant events and themes in history now has a version in HA as well as AHL.
ABC-CLIO is also planning to add a Library Admin module permitting the setting of site defaults, including a redirect-on-exit URL, at the institutional level. Further details on this feature are forthcoming.
