About UC’s California Digital Library:

At the core of the California Digital Library (CDL) is a simple idea – by mobilizing the expertise and creativity of our community and engaging in collaborative problem-solving, we can transform the way libraries and scholars work, thus furthering the University of California’s mission to educate, illuminate, and serve. Together with the UC campus libraries and other partners, the CDL is an integral component of the University’s capacity for innovation and research breakthroughs.

CDL welcomes and encourages diversity and seeks applications and nominations from individuals from underrepresented groups. CDL seeks to recruit and retain an inclusive workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the people of California, to maintain the excellence of the University of California, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning.

About the Infrastructure & Application Support (IAS) team:

Reporting to the IAS Manager, the IAS Infrastructure Engineer will be an enthusiastic member of a dynamic team applying advanced infrastructure concepts, techniques, and objectives to plan, create, maintain, enhance, and operate robust, highly available services responsive to the evolving needs of the CDL’s digital library programs and services. The IAS team is responsible for managing the technology framework upon which all CDL services are built, and the CDL infrastructure resides wholly within the AWS cloud.

About the IAS Infrastructure Engineer position:

We are seeking a candidate with the aptitude, attitude and curiosity needed to improve our infrastructure with increased functionality, reliability and performance. Projects include additional automation of routine activities, enhanced management of technology resources and expanded use of Infrastructure as Code.

You will be joining a systems engineering team with a focus on providing quality customer support, implementing new AWS services and managing a stable platform for our development teams and end users.  We have a particular focus on advanced monitoring, logging and alerting processes, allowing the team to identify potential problems and address them before they result in system outages. Excellent teamwork and communications are essential for the successful candidate.

Position responsibilities:

  • UNIX/Linux System & Network Administration: Performs all complex technical support tasks necessary to ensure the nominal operation of the Linux systems, including system design, configuration, implementation, maintenance, and modification.
  • AWS Administration: Designs, implements, and maintains complex cloud infrastructure components and services according to AWS standards and best-practices.
  • Data & Network Security Administration: Creates and maintains a data protection program for a complex environment, using industry-standard procedures, to ensure the integrity and availability of all data within the infrastructure.

The California Digital Library is a unit within the University of California Office of the President, has a staff of 70+ and is located in downtown Oakland. Though our preference is for the IAS Infrastructure Engineer to work in the Oakland office, applicants from outside the Bay Area who wish to work remotely will be given equal consideration.
