UC Request Software Offers Links to HathiTrust’s Emergency Temporary Access to Copyrighted Books
In order to help UC faculty, students, and staff at all ten University of California campuses get electronic content as quickly as possible, the Request program has integrated access to copyright protected material via HathiTrust’s Emergency Temporary Access System (ETAS).
When UC faculty, students, and staff from any of the ten University of California campuses access the Request software to place an interlibrary loan request, the system will search for the material in the UC-wide print holdings in the HathiTrust ETAS. If a match is found, the user will be presented with a link to the digitized material. Clicking on that link will prompt the user to log into HathiTrust using their UC campus credentials (if not already logged in), then take them to a page where they can read (“check out”) the complete digitized item. When they return to Request, can either cancel (not place a request) or continue to place an ILL request.
Initially, the Request program will offer links to UC’s monographic holdings at HathiTrust, but work is in progress to expand to the functionality to also offer links to UC’s serials holdings.
