Licensing Positions Available at the California Digital Library!
The California Digital Library’s Collection Development and Management program has two exciting opportunities available to join our effort to transition our systemwide journal licenses to open access publishing agreements with scholarly publishers. We’re working to improve the way research is communicated by building pathways for UC researchers to make all of their journal articles immediately openly available at publisher sites through sustainable, scalable strategies that can enable positive global change. The Open Access Publisher Agreements Manager will collaborate with other members of the CDL team and campus library partners to develop and implement publisher agreements that enable open access publishing by UC researchers. The Publisher Agreements Manager will manage the implementation of these agreements, including interfacing with publisher representatives, coordinating across the ten UC campus libraries, and collaborating with other stakeholders to develop new workflows and put these transformative agreements into practice. The incumbent will apply effective project management to ensure that multiple implementations reach successful conclusions for the UC research community and other stakeholders. Finally, this individual will plan, coordinate and participate in outreach and assessment activities for these agreements, helping to ensure that the UC community is aware of these arrangements and that they are having the desired positive impacts.
The successful candidate should have a passion for creating real, positive change in scholarly communication and for making research information more accessible and usable throughout the world. Additionally, this person should have a strong working knowledge of scholarly communications and academic publishing; experience with project management principles; an understanding of technical issues and workflow development; and expertise in collaboration, outreach, and assessment.
The Open Access Data Analyst will work closely with the Open Access Collection Strategist to conduct complex data analysis in support of negotiations for transformative agreements at the California Digital Library and other partner institutions. This person will gather and synthesize data about publication patterns, subscription terms, financial transactions, and other relevant information into reports and visualizations that can communicate key insights to negotiators, library administrators, and other stakeholders. Analyses conducted will include evaluations of existing interactions between universities and academic publishers, as well as projections of future interactions under various assumptions, constraints, requirements, and priorities. The world of scholarly communication is changing rapidly, and the Data Analyst will play a key role in developing and applying data-driven insights to help us understand the world we’re in and shape the world we want to create.
This staff member will need excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye towards developing outputs that will be maximally impactful for stakeholders within the institution and a knack for developing creative solutions to open-ended problems and answering questions before they are asked. Clear, concise communication of the results of analyses is critical for this role, and familiarity with the scholarly publishing space and the academic library environment as a whole is important as well.
