Thomson Reuters Resources: Changes for 2016

With the new Web of Science/ISI contract, Journal Citation Reports (JCR) has moved to the InCites platform, which also includes a new to UC product, Essential Scientific Indicators (ESI).  Together, JCR and ESI create Journal and Highly Cited Data (JHCD).

In JCR, three new metrics accompany the transition:

  • JIF percentiles – Journal Impact Factor Percentile within the subject category.
  • Normalized Eigenfactor Score – A value of 1 indicates average influence within a subject category.
  • % Articles in Citable Items – The percent of citable items for the current data year that are articles (vs. Reviews).

Additional new features include a new filter for Open Access journals (as defined by those in DOAJ) within JCR;  downloadable data for individual journals, journals in a subject area, or all journals; easily visible Year-to-Year Data for individual journals on a journal’s profile page; a journal relations visualization tool which shows citation patterns between journals. Essential Scientific Indicators (ESI) is a new resource containing rankings across 22 broad disciplines for authors, institutions, countries, and journals. It includes links to ‘hot’ papers and can help you identify top researchers or institutions in specific fields. Another new addition to the Web of Science Core Collection is the Essential Science Citation Index (ESCI). From the main website: “As a new index in the Web of Science™ Core Collection, Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) expands the citation universe and reflects the growing global body of science and scholarly activity. ESCI complements the highly selective indexes by providing earlier visibility for sources under evaluation as part of SCIE, SSCI, and AHCI’s rigorous journal selection process. Inclusion in ESCI provides greater discoverability which leads to measurable citations and more transparency in the selection process.”
