WorldCat Discovery Services beta is launched
On April 30, 2014 OCLC released the WorldCat Discovery Services beta to existing WorldCat Local customers. OCLC has provided campus-specific preview URLs for the WorldCat Discovery Services (Beta) interface. Links to the beta are available on the CDL Melvyl website.
Currently, WorldCat Discovery has limited WorldCat Local (WCL) functionality as OCLC has focused to date on the FirstSearch replacement capabilities. Over the next weeks and months OCLC will be adding many of the features currently in use in campus WCL (Melvyl) instances. Much of the core discovery functionality is already present: searching, brief results, detailed item records, sorting, facets, full text and ILL links.
VERY IMPORTANT – The preview system links to the live UC-eLinks and Request services. Please DO NOT place any requests while testing functionality in this system.
UC-eLinks: where to find it
The UC-eLinks menu deploys from the Check eResources button on the Item Detail (full record) screen.
Request: Do not use it in the beta version
The Request service deploys from the Request Item button on the Item Detail (full record) screen on the Availability tab. The Request service is also available from the “Request It’ link on the UC-eLinks menu (see information above).
WorldShare Management Services (WMS)
If your campus is a WorldShare Management Services (WMS) subscriber, you will see a “Sign In” link in the upper right corner. Use your WMS credentials for this logon. The “Sign In” link for WorldCat Local (WCL) libraries will be implemented later in the year when more of the WCL features are added to the preview system.
Give the preview system a try and let OCLC know what you think. You can send comments to OCLC via the Tell us what you think! link at the bottom of the screen…
