EZID Service Update — September & October 2012

 

 

September & October Activities

  • We conducted an identifier clean-up exercise and were able to reduce substantially the incidence of broken and bad links. To all who assisted, we are thankful for your participation in the effort to insure identifier quality.
  • We announced that DataCite would implement the policy of requiring metadata for DOIs as of 12/31/12. EZID will make our DOI registration code conform to the new procedures starting Sunday, December 2nd, 2012. Our API and UI changes will be available for testing in mid November.
  • We tightened up the EZID system with several changes and improvements in the back end. One outcome is a substantial performance improvement in the ARK identifier minting process.
  • The DOI registration service encountered three brief interruptions in October due to problems with DataCite’s service center; however the resolution service itself was never affected. DataCite is working with the service provider to address needed appropriate long term infrastructure upgrades.
  • EZID Service Manager Joan Starr and a group of other CDL and University of California (UC) campus colleagues had a paper published on data management services, available here: http://escholarship.umassmed.edu/jeslib/vol1/iss2/7/.

Service Description

EZID (easy-eye-dee) is a production service that gives researchers the ability to create and manage long-term identifiers so that they can to track usage, get credit for their work, share their data, and have the data reused for additional research. As a result, EZID identifiers also make it possible to increase citations, to build on previous work, to conduct new research, and avoid duplicating previous efforts.

Service Statistics

Since June 25, 2010, EZID has had an uptime performance 99.9%. A service outage in August persisted for 30 minutes or less beginning at midnight, 8/25/12, PDT.
