SCP Monthly Update December 2019

SCP posted the distribution statistics report for the month of November 2019. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. They are color coded as: Net Increase (Green) — Net Decrease (Red) — New Package (Purple).

For serials, cataloging end-of-year new acquisitions continues to be our priority. Our major record distributions were EBSCO. CINAHL complete online journals (167 titles).

For serials cataloging transition Phase II, SCP processed two more packages, JSTOR online journals (in file 191112) and Periodicals Archive online journals (in file 191125). Records switched in batch mode were included in the weekly serial distribution files containing “rc” code (both 599 DEL$b rc for the print and 599 NEW$b rc for the online). Records requiring manual review will be included in later weekly serial distribution files. For the details about processing, please see the CDLINFO article and Phase II FAQ page.

For monographs, SCP added a new collection Gale. Archives of Sexuality & Gender online monographs (1,500 titles). Other major record distributions were: ACM conference proceedings (23 titles), Alexander Street Press. Classical music library online audio (746 titles), ASME Digital Collection monographs (42 titles, including: conference proceedings 24 titles, monographs 18 titles ), Cambridge online monographs (192 titles), CRCnetBASE online monographs (89 titles), Elsevier monographs (69 titles in 19 subjects, including two new subjects: Specialty medicine online monographs 11 titles, Specialty surgery online monographs 5 titles), IEEE Xplore online conference proceedings (181 titles), Institute of Physics online monographs (87 titles), JSTOR monographs (477 titles), Open access resources (241 titles, including: eScholarship 207 titles, Knowledge Unlatched 43 titles), SpringerLink monographs (809 titles in 20 subjects, including: Biomedical and life sciences 54 titles, Computer science 107 titles, Economics and finance 41 titles, Education 38 titles, and Springer Protocols 429 titles), TransTech monographs (81 titles in five series), and Wiley online monographs (69 titles).

Update on Springer Collection: Based on a helpline request on Thursday, November 14, from UCB, SCP was informed that Springer had changed their openURL syntax from ‘springerlink.com’ to ‘link.springer.com.’ This change affects 8,300+ URLs in the PID server and a further 1,277 records in the campus catalogs. Our cataloger took this opportunity to instead convert all of the OpenURLs to DOIs. The catalog records were distributed on November 25th in the regular distribution file.

DDA Programs: Update on Airiti DDA: SCP removed 383 records of Airiti DDA discovery records that are no longer available for DDA. Most of them were provided in 2013 and a few provided in 2014. Campus bibliographers of Chinese studies were informed of this change. The removed records were distributed in file 191125.

DDA programs with numbers changed as of today, December 3, 2019: Airiti DDA (3,077 discovery records + 788 purchased titles), CNPeReading CDL DDA online monographs (6,260 discovery records + 210 purchased titles), and JSTOR CDL DDA pilot (8,199 discovery records + 1,725 purchased titles). DDA Programs with no change: CRC Press ENGnetBASE online monographs (406 purchased titles (2013 package (105 titles), 2014 package (64 titles), 2015 package (133 titles), and 2016 package (104 titles)), EBSCO Japanese DDA (466 purchased titles), Maruzen eBook Library online monographs (311 purchased titles) and YBP/Ebrary online monographs via ProQuest (665 purchased titles).

• Cataloging Delay (if more than three months): A title might have been missed on the vendor title list, UC-eLinks (SFX) might have not yet been activated, OCLC record might have not been available yet, to name a few things that cause cataloging delays. It usually takes about two-three months for OCLC records to become available or for items to become available for SFX activation when new titles are added to an existing collection.
• Cataloging Errors: Please include the OCLC Number (preferred), ISSN, or ISBN in the ‘Record Locator’ section of the form.

Holiday closure: Due to UCSD holiday closure, SCP will post the last SCP files for the 2019 calendar year on Monday, December 16. Weekly file distribution will then resume on Monday, January 6, 2020. We wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season!

SCP Monthly Update November 2019

SCP posted the distribution statistics report for the month of October 2019. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. They are color coded as: Net Increase (Green) — Net Decrease (Red) — New Package (Purple) — Removed Package (Orange) — Package changed name or absorbed by/split into another package (Blue).

For serials, cataloging end-of-year new acquisitions continues to be our priority. Our major record distributions were EBSCO. CINAHL complete online journals (386 titles).

For serials cataloging transition Phase II, SCP strategized the workflow and tested it out with the first package, the Literature online (LION) online journals. Records switched in batch mode were included in the weekly serial distribution file for 191028 containing “rc” code (both 599 DEL$b rc for the print and 599 NEW$b rc for the online). The 15 remaining records in this package that needed manual review were included in the weekly serial distribution file for 191104. For monographs, our major record distributions were: ACM monographs (118 titles, including conference proceedings 116 titles), CRCnetBASE online monographs (66 titles), Elsevier monographs (71 titles in 15 subjects), IEEE Xplore online conference proceedings (289 titles), JSTOR monographs (364 titles), Knovel Library online monographs (68 titles), Safari tech books online monographs (10 titles), SpringerLink monographs (606 titles in 18 subjects, including: Biomedical and life sciences 66 titles, Computer science 153 titles, Economics and finance 53 titles, Education 51 titles, and Medicine 75 titles), and CNPeReading online monographs (436 titles).

For the new collection Gale Archives of Sexuality & Gender, it is taking longer to process than expected. The reason is that over half the collection consists of unidentified or misidentified multi-part monographs. In every record where this is found, each URL has to be checked and it’s enumeration verified. The records will be distributed in smaller batches as they pass inspection. SCP asks for your continued patience.

For serials, cataloging end-of-year new acquisitions continues to be our priority. Our major distributions were Cambridge online journals (98 titles), Open access resource selected by the UC Libraries (33 titles, including a new subset: Mary Ann Liebert online journals 3 titles). Please note that CINAHL Complete is now a Tier 2 replacing CINAHL with Plus Full Text; see CDLINFO article for details. Titles in CINAHL Plus have been changed to EBSCO. CINAHL complete online journals (721 titles).  New titles will be added in upcoming months.

For monographs, a new collection was added: MIT Press Direct online monographs (2,857 titles); see CDLINFO article for details. Also for this month,

• Early English Book Online (EEBO) contents migrated to ProQuest platform (see CDLINFO article for details).  Old URLs for 130,000 titles in this collection were replaced quickly and efficiently, thanks to Kate Garvey-Clasby who was able to develop strategies and completed this task mostly in batch mode.
• SCP removed packages that have less than 4 participants: Agricultural & environmental science database (2,057 titles, including: online journals 2,005 titles, databases 20 titles, online monographs 32 titles), Pishu online journals (505 titles).
• SCP is preparing the first journal package for serials cataloging transition Phase II. We expect to send out most of a package at one time along with notification to the SCP-AC and SCPSYS lists. We will include the Phase II implementation updates in the SCP Monthly Update as well. Please see this CDLINFO article for more details.
• SCP web pages: CDL website migration was completed and the new website went live on September 15. Please let us know if you encounter any issues.

SCP Monthly Update September 2019

SCP has posted the distribution statistics report for the month of August 2019. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. For serials, it has been another busy month cataloging end-of-year new acquisitions finishing the T&F journal archive and most titles of the Gale Sabin journals, cataloging more titles in the Cambridge journal archive, as well as planning and preparing for serials Phase II–converting print records to online records.  The major distributions were Cambridge online journals (84 titles), Gale. Sabin Americana, 1500-1926 online journals (1,205 titles), Taylor & Francis online journals  (14 titles), and China online journals (37 titles in 4 subject areas). We also added a new set of JapanKnowledge online journals (3 titles).

Note on SCP serials cataloging transition Phase II: On August 19, SCP distributed 860+ print serial records set for deletion with the usual 599: DEL|c1908xx.  These are records that should already have a distributed online counterpart SCP record. They are from all serials packages. The major net decrease for packages are highlighted here: EBSCO journals (372 titles: Academic search complete 180 titles, Business source complete 51 titles, CINAHL plus 22 titles, Education source 48 titles, Library literature & information science 20 titles, and MasterFILE premier 42 titles), Gale. Literature Resource Center online journals (18 titles), JSTOR journals (57 titles), Materials science & engineering database online journals (28 titles), Nexis Uni online journals (69 titles), Open access resource  selected by the UC Libraries (593 titles: DOAJ 252 titles, HighWire Press 20 titles, PubMed Central 38 titles, Scielo 22 titles, and U.S. online journals 22 titles), ProQuest journals (25 titles), and Wiley-Blackwell online journals (32 titles).  Due to recent migration of ProQuest EEBO collection of 130,000+ from its legacy Chadwyck-Healey interface to the newly-enhanced ProQuest Platform (see CDLINFO article) it will take time for SCP to switch URLs for individual titles. The serials Phase II transition by package will delay until after the EEBO URL switchover is complete.

SCP Monthly Update August 2019

SCP has posted the distribution statistics report for the month of July 2019. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. They are color coded as: Net Increase (Green) — Net Decrease (Red) — New Package (Purple) — Removed Package (Orange).

For serials, it has been the busiest month cataloging end-of-year new acquisitions such as Taylor & Francis journal archive, Gale Sabin journals, Cambridge journal archive, keeping up with aggregator database monthly updates (EBSCO and Gale) and updating Elsevier journals due to Elsevier closing access to the Freedom Collection and shutting off access to 2019 content (and content going forward) for UC’s licensed ScienceDirect journals.  New packages distributed: Gale. Sabin Americana, 1500-1926 online journals(6 titles), Open access resource selected by the UC Libraries. Hate in America online newspapers(20 titles). Other major distributions were Cambridge online journals(10 titles), Open Access journals(51 titles, including ScienceDirect 30 titles), ScienceDirect online journals(43 titles), and Taylor & Francis online journals (51 titles). The distributions also included a removed package: ScienceDirect online journals. Freedom collection(2,226 titles).

Kudos to Kate Garvey-Clasby for getting the Elsevier journals access updates done on very short notice. It’s a challenging task as our serials often cross multiple packages with different coverage. The Freedom Collection update consisted of either deleting Freedom Collection records entirely, or by deleting access links from existing records. For ScienceDirect records that had open holdings, she closed off the holdings in the 856 field with a “-2018.” Kate also had to generate Local Holdings Records (LHRs) and update holdings on OCLC. It required a lot of intellectual effort to design and craft sophisticated logistics to ensure the updates were done effectively and in the correct order. Kate planned it well and did it on cue.

For monographs, the addition of 36,885 records to the Gale. Sabin Americana, 1500-1926 online monographsbrings title-level cataloging for the monographs to a close. Following up on last month’s update on Naxos, 5,301 new records were added to the Naxos music library online audio main collection with Jazz additions and deletions soon to come.

Other major record distributions were: ACM Digital Library online conference proceedings(135 titles), Berg Fashion Library online monographs(37 titles), Cambridge online monographs(205 titles), CRCnetBASE online monographs(174 titles), Elsevier monographs(145 titles in 17 subjects), IEEE Xplore online conference proceedings(173 titles), JSTOR monographs (385 titles), Safari tech books online monographs(9 titles), SpringerLink monographs (670 titles in 19 subjects, including: Biomedical and life sciences57 titles, Computer science80 titles, Economics and finance48 titles, Engineering68 titles, Medicine 83 titles, Social sciences54 titles), Wiley monographs(18 titles), CNP monographs(91 titles) and Superstar. Note on SCP serials cataloging transition, Phase II: After consultation with SCP-AC members and SCP system liaisons, SCP will start Phase II implementation to convert 44,000+ print records to online records. On August 19, SCP will include in the distribution file 800+ print records for deletion. These records are from all packages that they already have equivalent online records distributed in the past by SCP. Starting September 1, SCP will take a package by package approach to convert print records to online records. We expect to send out most of a package at one time along with notification to the SCP-AC and SCPSYS lists. We will include the Phase II implementation updates in the SCP Monthly Update as well. SCP Monthly Update July 2019

SCP has posted the distribution statistics report for the month of June 2019. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. For serials, major distributions were Open Access journals (95 titles, including DOAJ 61 titles) and Taylor & Francis online journals (13 titles).

For monographs, the new collection Gale. Sabin Americana, 1500-1926 online monographs(7,944 titles) was added. The slight delay in cataloging comes from having to identify the duplicate titles already cataloged in World Scholar Selections from Sabin Americana, 1500-1926, Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Making of the Modern World collections, among others, not to mention the appearance of duplicate titles/records within the collection itself.  SCP is confident the remainder of the collection will be cataloged in July. Note on Naxos: Following up on last month’s update, SCP has identified approximately 20,000 records to delete from our collective catalogs and approximately 35,000 to add as new.  This sounds like an easy fix but it is not.  The Naxos collections frequently overlap with Alexander Street collections, especially in the subject areas of classical and jazz.  SCP must be careful not to delete viable Alexander Street records while at the same time preventing the creation of duplicate records with the new Naxos content.  Time will always be a factor and SCP appreciates your continued patience.

Note on SCP serials cataloging: We are into the fourth month of Phase I of implementing separate record approach, limited to SCP new serials titles and related records only. For the implementation of Phase II, i.e., retrospective changes for existing titles on print records to records for online version, SCP plans to discuss with SCP-AC members at its meeting in July. Note on Naxos: The Naxos Music Library collections will be actively worked on in June to correct a problem created by the vendor. The entire collection (approx. 110,000 titles) must be analyzed to identify the titles in our catalogs we are/are not entitled to, the titles we should be entitled to, and to distinguish the titles correctly belonging to the Main and Jazz collections. This will require distributing a combination of records to be updated, deleted, and/or newly added for each participating campus. This work will not be done quickly but it will be done as quickly as possible.

DDA Programs: The first set of 310 ebook records from Maruzen eBook Library, a new Japanese DDA, were distributed in May.  Other titles can be found by searching the database at http://uclibs.org/PID/330947.  As such, there will be no discovery records for this collection.  Title-level cataloging will occur only when titles are triggered for purchase.  For more details, please check here.

SCP Monthly Update April 2019

For serials, we distributed a new collection of Lyell Collection online journals(9 titles). Other major distributions were EBSCO journals(16 titles), IEEE Xplore online journals (15 titles), Morgan & Claypool online journals(25 titles), Open Access journals(339 titles, including DOAJ 288 titles, PubMed Central13 titles, and Taylor & Francis15 titles). There were also 82 titles of Open Access journals removed.

For monographs, we distributed a new collection of Lyell monographs(542 titles, including Engineering geology special publications online monographs23 titles, Memoir (Geological Society of London) online monographs48 titles, and Special publication of the Geological Society of London online monographs466 titles).  Lyell Collection is an online collection comprising the Geological Society of London’s journal titles, Special Publication Ebooks, and unique content (memoirs) relevant to active earth science programs. Note on Chinese DDA records: Over 4,200 of CNPeReading DDA discovery records were sent to Data Sync Service for record matching or creation in Jan. 2019, after Bie-hwa Ma and Kate Garvey-Clasby prepared the file including deduping among e-books packages and cleanup). OCLC returned the results in Feb.  Among them, 3,672 new records were distributed and the same amount of brief records were sent for deletion on Feb. 19, 2019. There were 517 records not distributed due to matched OCLC records lacking parallel Romanization fields. We are currently waiting for OCLC to resolve the issue. Please stay tuned for the upcoming update.

However, SCP provides an active link “Status” to cataloging request status pages for both new collection/database and OA journal titles on SCP webpage next to the request forms, also listed below in the “Useful links”. Anyone can click on “Status” to check the status such as SCP’s recommendation, JSC decision, and cataloging status. For OA journals, title in green highlight indicates the title is cataloged. For new collection/database, title in green highlight indicates database level cataloging is done, yellow highlight indicates title level cataloging is done.

• SCP cataloging delay: If any librarian and staff notice a particular title that seems to have been delayed in cataloging for more than three months, please report to CDL Helpline. SCP catalogers are very good at keeping track of the titles/collections they catalog, most packages updated on a quarterly basis. However, a title could have been missed in listing on the vendor title list, SFX has not been activated, missing OCLC record, to name a few. It usually takes about two-three months for OCLC records become available or for SFX to become ready for activation when new titles added to an existing collection. Longer than three months is a good cue that the title may not have appeared on a cataloger’s radar. Reporting via CDL Helpline will help resolve the issue.
• SCP cataloging errors: If any librarian and staff notice an error in a SCP catalog record, please report to CDL Helpline. Because most of SCP monographic records you receive may be the result of a batch cataloging process. Reporting via  CDL Helpline will help correct the record.

For serials distributions, SCP has been focusing on cataloging open access titles, nearing the finish line on cataloging the collection of State Public Historical Library (Russia) online journals (adding 109 titles), thanks again for the cooperation of Peter and Kevin Balster’s student from UCLA. As a result, distributed Open Access journal (147 titles, includes 31 individual open access title requests). Other distribution also include: JSTOR journals (33 titles).

A note on cataloging about 600 titles of SPIE conference proceedings: Becky Culbertson enlisted Donal O’Sullivan’s help in creating an OCLC macro that helps supply commonly required codes and data elements to OCLC vendor records in addition to the manual enhancement of certain fields. Eventually subject analysis will be done at a later date. Kate loaded the records in batch to get records ready for distribution. This SPIE conference proceedings cataloging project is a snapshot on how SCP catalogers collaborate and get cataloging done in the least amount time possible while keeping on-going with their other regular duties. The macro Donal developed was also modified and adopted recently by Annie Ross for cataloging IEEE conference proceedings.

DDA Programs: SCP has sent the Airiti CDL DDA online monographs titles through OCLC DataSync processing. These Airiti DDA records will appear with a 599 NEW in the Monday 12/3 monos file, and will contain OCLC numbers in the 001 field. These are replacing the Airiti records containing the “p” vendor number in the 001 field, which are being sent as DELetes in the 12/3 file. We will no longer need to post special files/loads for Airiti DDA records in the future. SCP monthly update November 2018

SCP will post the distribution statistics report for the month of October at this page soon. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. For serials distributions, SCP finished the major update on additions, withdrawals, and embargo changes for journal titles in all the EBSCOhost databases. The changes for October were 83 new titles added (include Academic search complete 80 titles) and 23 titles removed. Upon finishing EBSCO update, cataloging open access journals has been the focus in October, catching up most of the requests. As a result, distributed Open Access journal (259 titles, includes DOAJ, 61 titles, and two new collections: Revistas cientificas complutenses online journals 92 titles and State Public Historical Library (Russia) online journals 30 titles). This latter collection is a group of Russian Revolutionary journals from the first half of the twentieth century. Peter Fletcher from UCLA cooperated with us in obtaining good print or microfilm records useful in derive separate electronic records. He has continued to help us when we have Cyrillic transliteration questions. Eventually this collection will grow to become 187 titles. We very much appreciate the cooperation of Peter and Kevin Balster’s student.

Another major serials distribution were two new Chinese collections: Chinese periodical journals (20068 titles) and Late Qing dynasty periodical full-text database (1833-1911) online journals (297 titles). Bie-Hwa Ma, Chinese metadata librarian, has been working long and hard, as well as team up with University of Michigan persuading the content provider to provide title list with metadata that met the basic of CDL technical requirements, such as title ID, url (still encrypted after long-term negotiation), summary, more detailed coverage, parallel Romanization element, etc. These two collections are also the guinea pig for SCP testing out adding records to OCLC via DataSync Service. SCP-AC members’ support on making exception to use separate record approach made it possible for SCP using OCLC DataSync to add these two collections to OCLC. Bie-Hwa had been working together with Kate Garvey-Clasby and Donal O’Sullivan, two SCP batch operation experts, developed sophisticated MarcEdit task list to convert vendor title lists into MARC records, tested out in June with 100 records, and sent the complete file of 20,385 records to OCLC DataSync in late September. Bie-Hwa also applied for a new MARC source code to store the title ID and content provider in MARC 024 field, for example: 024_7 $aW_29629 $2cnbksy. The new source code provides additional identifier to discovery and access to these two collections. Although there are some duplicated records generated and problem records need to fix, the overall result is positive and majority of records were distributed to campus. It takes a village to provide access to such a complex Chinese language package. Thanks to everyone, especially Bie-Hwa and Kate!

Note on SCP web pages: as part of CDL website migration, SCP web pages are in a soft freeze period; all updates will be sent to CDL web team, so there will be some delay on keeping current with E-resource tracking page, record distribution statistics, etc. There were questions about the SCP note at the end of SCP monthly update on batching cataloging and the scope of SCP records not meet the standard for full-level records. 88% of SCP serials contain at least one LC subject heading. Great attention is paid to the verification/addition of ISSN information including MARC 022, 222, and 776 fields. The bulk of those that don’t are the Dacheng online journals brief records (6,822 as expected). This number will go up as the Minguo periodicals are added, again this is to be expected.

The less-than-full records are mostly from OCLC (including vender records added to OCLC), including DOAJ titles. Because of the annual CONSER cataloging project, full-level DOAJ titles will eventually overlay DOAJ less-than-full brief records via OCLC daily updates. SCP also creates less-than-full records, currently most for Chinese packages, based on vendor title lists, such as newly added Chinese periodical journals. For these less-than-full records, SCP relies on OCLC daily update and set the criteria to receive notification if OCLC records updated to full, RDA, or added subject headings, etc. The updated records are re-distributed to campuses. If any records get manually cataloged, it would bring up to full level by PCC BSR standard. For Chinese packages, Bie-Hwa Ma takes leadership established several cooperative cataloging teams, one team on one collection modeling CONSER DOAJ project, with catalogers from several CEAL libraries who have subscription to at least one of several collections. Once records update to full-level, they will be re-distributed. For example, about 400 full-level serials records for Dacheng collection were recently re-distributed. Records re-distribution doesn’t reflect in SCP monthly updates.

We also rely on error reports we received via CDL helpline as well as from UCSD users and catalogers.

SCP has posted the distribution statistics report for the month of September. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. For serials distributions, SCP continued to focus on the major additions, withdrawals, and embargo changes for journal titles in all the EBSCOhost databases. The changes for August were 138 new titles added (Academic search complete 133 titles). Other highlights were: JSTOR online journals (51 titles) and Open Access Journal (57 titles, includes DOAJ, 12 titles).

SCP monthly update August 2018

SCP has posted the distribution statistics report for the month of July. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. . For serials distributions, SCP continued to focus on the major additions, withdrawals, and embargo changes for journal titles in all the EBSCOhost databases. This resulted in June were 30 new titles added (>Art & architecture source 17 titles and CINAHL plus 13 titles) and the removal of 466 titles (includes Academic search complete 423 titles and Business source complete 28 titles). For Open Access Journal, 83 titles added to Bentham online journals and 62 titles removed from DOAJ.

For monographs, we changed the collection name for 2001 titles from Springer Protocols online monographs to SpringerLink online monographs. Springer Protocols as Springer Protocols platform deactivated and its contents moved to the SpringerLink platform. See details on CDL announcement. The major highlight of this month is that as of June 26, SCP reached a milestone. For serials distributions, SCP continued to focus on the major additions, withdrawal, and embargo changes for journal titles in all the EBSCOhost databases. This resulted for June were 98 new titles added to Art & architecture source and the removal of 127 titles (includes Academic search complete 49 titles and CINAHL plus 70 titles).

For monographs, we added one new open access resource selected by the UC Libraries, Cambridge online monographs 29 titles. ProQuest Early English books online monographs: Kate Garvey-Clasby did a major update by removing existed 129,009 titles and loaded a new set of 130,753 vendor records. The many updated records included enriched data and/or link to the scanned images. A special file is posted with specific instruction for campuses to update this collection locally. All new records now contain a ProQuest control number in MARC tag 001 with a prefix “eebo” (sometimes this is an OCLC number for the microfilm version of a title; sometimes it is a vendor control number). No OCLC holdings attached to any titles in this collection, the same as the records for this collection before this update.

CDL eScholarship online monographs: the initial batch of 1455 titles in the eScholarship monographs collection was distributed to campuses on Monday, July 2, 2018. Donal O’Sullivan, Kate Garvey-Clasby, and Becky Culbertson spent several months planning and strategizing, working with Lisa Schiff and her colleagues at CDL as well as in consultation with OCLC staff. Especially Donal finalized the strategies and developed the MarcEdit task list to identify and convert CDL mass digitization records into MARC 21 records in OCLC in batch. Thanks to all of them for getting this complicated project done by the deadline. This is an open access collection representing the academic output of some UC faculty and staff. The collection is ongoing and will be updated on a quarterly basis.

SCP has posted the distribution statistics report for the month of April. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. The highlights of our major serial record distributions are Pishu online journals (505 titles) and CIAO online journals (20 titles). Pishu‘s full title is China economy, public policy, and security database, a collection of high-value analytical reports intended to guide policymaking in the People’s Republic of China. You may remember that we had to remove CIAO’s individual titles in March 2016 due to platform changes. It’s a welcome change when links to individual titles become available. Highlights of other serials record distributions are Open Access journals (273 titles, includes DOAJ, 246 titles), Oxford online journals (17 titles), Taylor & Francis online journals (28 titles), Wiley-Blackwell online journals (18 titles).

For monographs, we added two new huge collections. One is ProQuest U.K. parliamentary papers. House of Commons papers 1801-1900 online monographs (77,209 titles). We have had access to this collection since 2006/07, but at the time no records were available for individual titles. The other is Alexander Street Press monographs Jazz music library online audio (10,098 titles) which is part of Alexander Street’s Music Online Listening collection but not identified as such until recently. We added a new collection of ProQuest US major dailies online newspapers (5 titles). It provides access to the five most respected U.S. national and regional newspapers: The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and the Wall Street Journal. The content is available by 8 AM U.S. Eastern time each day and provides archives stretching as far back as 1980. All titles are cross searchable on the ProQuest platform along with ProQuest historical online newspapers (15 titles), formerly ProQuest online newspapers, as well as all other ProQuest databases. The highlights of our other major serial record distributions were EBSCO journals (28 titles, includes Academic search complete 16 titles), Materials science & engineering database online journals (443 titles), Nexis Uni online journals (20 titles), and Open Access journals (101 titles, includes DOAJ, 86 titles).

SCP has posted the distribution statistics report for the month of January. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. This month we added two new serials collections: Annual reviews online journals (60 titles) and Materials science & engineering database online journals (472 titles). Annual reviews provide access to the Complete Science and Economics Collection and titles start with “Annual review of …” More details can be found at here; Materials science & engineering database (MSED) is a result of ProQuest upgraded UC’s Earthquake Engineering Abstracts systemwide subscription to the broader MSEDdatabase. It has around 3300 journal and 45 monographic titles. Most titles will be distributed within the first two weeks of February. MSED has some overlapping contents with the tier 3 collection of Agricultural & environmental science database. The highlights of our other major serial record distributions were EBSCO journals (361 titles, includes Academic search complete 329 titles and CINAHL plus 18 titles), JSTOR online journals, (31 titles), and Open Access journals (157 titles, includes DOAJ, 46 titles).

Tony Harvell, a UCSD Library retiree and former program director of the Content Acquisition & Resource Sharing started to volunteer for SCP cataloging in January 2018. He works with Becky Culbertson on the National Academies Press online monographs, an open access collection, 8 hours per week.

SCP monthly update January 2018

Happy New Year 2018!

SCP has posted the distribution statistics report for the month of December. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. Here are the highlights of our major record distributions. Our major serial record distributions were EBSCO journals (61 titles, includes Academic search complete online journals, 38 titles), JSTOR online journals, (57 titles), and Open Access journals (130 titles, includes DOAJ, 91 titles). There was also a major transition for LexisNexis academic online journals becoming Nexis Uni online journals. The preparation for this project started in August that involves comparing title lists between LexisNexis and Nexis Uni, updating linking in either SFX or PIDs for matched titles, removing titles that are no longer available under Nexis Uni, and adding new titles. As a result, 2,502 titles have been migrated, and 1,140 titles were removed in December. New titles will be cataloged and distributed in the coming months.

Starting January 2018, EBSCO Japanese DDA came to an end due to an unexpected change. We learned that EBSCO decided not to renew their contract with Kinokuniya as agent for 2018, and consequently many Japanese publishers cancelled their business contracts with EBSCO. As a result, a long list of Japanese e-books that have become unavailable because EBSCO lost distribution rights for those e-books, and the DDA program couldn’t continue. At this point, our users can freely access 416 DDA purchased e-books in our OPACs, Melvyl, and EBSCOhost. SCP removed all 2,272 DDA discovery records. Other DDA programs with number changed as of today: CNPeReading CDL DDA online monographs (2,543 discovery records + 34 purchased titles) and JSTOR CDL DDA pilot (2,102 discovery records + 186 purchased titles). Starting in 2017, CRC Press engineering titles will be acquired under a consortial STMnetbase contract that includes all CRC Press frontlist content and cataloged records are listed under CRC Press monographs.

In March 2017, Crossref, one of the main sources for DOI URLs, changed the format of their link from http://dx.doi.org/10… to http://doi.org/… This changed format has begun to show up in OCLC and vendor records and should not be mistaken for an error. Further, Crossref is also encouraging its members to use the more secure https:// along with the abbreviated link. All DOI instances are backwards compatible and will continue to work indefinitely. SCP monthly update August 2017

SCP has posted the distribution statistics report for the month of July. This monthly report shows net increase or decrease of titles from CDL licensed and selected open access collections. Here are the highlights of our major record distributions. For our major serial record distributions are the Open Access journals. There was a big shift, including a decrease of 1477 titles that no longer housed in DOAJ, and a subsequent big increase of1790 titles of“plain” Open Access journals. Three hundred were new OA titles; the remainder were “former” DOAJ titles that for one reason or another had been removed from the DOAJ database. When titles in DOAJ change, the earlier title is removed. SCP closes off the holdings and keeps the title as a “plain” OA. Also included in the Open Access journals this month were ScienceDirect online journals (19 titles), PubMed Central online journals (9 titles), etc.

For monographs, the major record distributions were: ACM Digital Library online conference proceedings (54 titles), Cambridge online monographs (449 titles), CRC Press. Notes on MeSH URIs in $0: Records are now starting to be exported from OCLC with MeSH URIs; these records are in this week’s file. See OCLC# 809741 for an example. After discussing with UCSD colleagues, SCP would like to accept the MeSH URIs as is in the records the same way UCSD does. For monographs, with the upgrade to STMnetBase, a new monographic collection was added: CRC Press. CRCnetBASE online monographs (83 titles). For titles published from 2017 onwards we will no longer identify CRC monographs by individual 793 collection (except for those in ChemNetBase). The 793 collection titles for past CRC Press monographs will remain in place. For DDA programs, as of today, 925 titles available from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2014 package (292 titles), 2015 package (352 titles), 2016 package (281 titles); 2,327 titles from the EBSCO Japanese DDA, 472 titles available from the JSTOR CDL DDA pilot, and 1,966 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 168 purchases from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE for year 2013 (104 titles) & 2014 (64 titles), 198 from the EBSCO Japanese, 17 from the JSTOR and 272 from the Airiti.

Starting January 2017, SCP posts monthly record distribution statistics reports instead of quarterly. The monthly reports present all packages being cataloged in a given month. For example, anyone can check the March report on cataloging status of a particular package that is not mentioned above in this update.

SCP recruitment update: Donal O’Sullivan accepted SCP E-package and ETL Specialist position, starting April 1, 2017. In his new capacity, Donal will have lead responsibility for e-package management, developing and employing processes for large scale data manipulation and transformation for the creation of bibliographic records, and for bibliographic record maintenance. He will also serve as the backup ETL (Extraction, transformation, and loading) specialist for the synchronization and exchange of MARC data between the Shared Cataloging Program and the ten UC campus libraries. Donal has been working at the UC San Diego Library since 1999. He held the positions of Serial specialist and then Documents Ordering & Receiving Specialist in the Acquisitions Department. Since 2006, he has been working in the Shared Cataloging Program as the Principal Monographs Metadata specialist, developing and applying batch processing techniques, system macros, and other process that automate cataloging resources, as well as performing original and copy cataloging of electronic monographs and serials. For DDA programs, CDL started JSTOR CDL DDA pilot online monographs with files distributed weekly, see CDL announcement for details. As of today, 881 titles available from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2014 package (292 titles), 2015 package (352 titles), 2016 package (237 titles); 2,327 titles from the EBSCO Japanese DDA, 390 titles available from JSTOR DDA pilot, and 2,017 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 168 purchases from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE for year 2013 (104 titles) & 2014 (64 titles), 198 from the EBSCO Japanese, and 195 from Airiti.

Becky Culbertson was busy dealing with journal titles that are removed from Aggregators (mainly EBSCO since Proquest and Gale are pretty steady). For example, in January 2017, 209 title change requests with 16 added titles and 171 titles removed or stopped; in February 2017, 87 title change requests with 3 added titles and 62 titles removed or stopped. For file distribution last month, 120 titles of EBSCO journals were removed.

SCP revised and updated the request form for new cataloging projects which simplified the questions asked and made the request form online. We also share the request status online for SCP recommendation, JSC decision, and the project initial completion date. Please share with your campus subject librarians.

Chinamaxx monographs (137 titles).

For DDA programs, 875 titles available from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2014 package (292 titles), 2015 package (352 titles), 2016 package (231 titles); 2,433 titles from the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 2,017 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 168 purchases from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE for year 2013 (104 titles) & 2014 (64 titles), 102 from the EBSCO Japanese, and 195 from Airiti.

SCP monthly update January 2017

Happy New Year!

For the month of December, our major serial record distributions include Open Access journals (191 titles which include: DOAJ, 132 titles; Taylor & Francis online journals, 24 titles). For monographs, the major record distributions are: CRC Press monographs (72 titles), IEEE Xplore online conference proceedings (81 titles), and Wiley online monographs (41 titles).

For DDA programs, 857 titles available from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2014 package (292 titles), 2015 package (352 titles), 2016 package (213 titles); 2,433 titles from the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 2,017 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 168 purchases from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE for year 2013 (104 titles) & 2014 (64 titles), 102 from the EBSCO Japanese, and 195 from Airiti.

Update on Dacheng online journals [大成老旧刊全文数据库]. To increase cataloging efficiency and meet user need of instant access to big sets of Chinese e-resources, Bie-hwa Ma has initiated several cooperative cataloging projects among CEAL member libraries. Dacheng was the first one launched in 2016 by four partners from Stanford University, University of Washington, University of Hong Kong, and SCP.

Initially, around 6,970 brief records were distributed to campuses in 2013. We are going to replace these brief records with OCLC records contributed by the 4 participating libraries. Dacheng‘s workflow has been adjusted to facilitate the effort as follows:

1. Bie-hwa identifies the titles with and without OCLC copy.
2. Bie-hwa adds encoding level 3 (brief) records into OCLC for those titles without OCLC copy
3. Participating libraries identify and enhance any existing OCLC records
4. Once the cataloging of the initial title list is finished, these records will be added as a collection in OCLC Collection Manager.
5. Brief records may be upgraded at this time by the participating libraries. In addition, new titles may be added. SCP will set up to receive automated notification of updates via OCLC Collection Manager.

As a result, 2,011 level-3 records with OCLC numbers have been distributed to campuses in the Dec. 2016 SCP file to replace the previously created brief records. Please note that most of these records have no coverage. They will be added at the time of cooperative full level cataloging. From now on, campuses will benefit from receipt of increasing number of records from this project.

Other Chinese Collaboration Cataloging projects. Another project is the Chinese periodical full-text database (1911-1949) [民国时期期刊] (25,000 titles) participated by four libraries from University of Michigan, Stanford University, University of Washington, and SCP. This will follow the same workflow model of Dacheng project.

The third project is China Academic Journals (CAJ). Since University of Hong Kong Library has finished the cataloging of CAJ and shared all of the OCLC numbers of records for CAJ titles including title changes, partners will identify and export the records they want on their own. SCP will soon export around 1,500 free full-level records that have not cataloged before due to hidden title changes, a major task on Bie-hwa’s to-do list since the initial cataloging was completed in 2009.
