SCP monthly update December 2016
For the month of November, our major serial record distributions include EBSCO journals (17 titles), Open Access journals (512 titles which include: DOAJ, 286 titles; PubMed Central online journals, 26 titles; ScienceDirect online journals, 28 titles; SpringerOpen online journals, 74 titles; Taylor & Francis online journals, 34 titles; and Wiley online journals, 29 titles), and China online journals (40 titles).
For monographs, the major record distributions are: CRC Press monographs (44 titles), IEEE Xplore online conference proceedings (109 titles), Knovel Library online monographs (30 titles), OECD iLibrary online monographs(390 titles), National Academies Press online monographs (50 titles), Springer monographs (319 titles), and Wiley online monographs (70 titles), and Apabi online monographs. Ebooks (162 titles).
Due to UC San Diego Library Winter Closure and staff vacation plan, the last SCP files for December distribution will be December 12. The first files for the New Year will be January 9.

As of this date, we have recorded 168 purchases from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE for year 2013 (104 titles) & 2014 (64 titles), 102 from the EBSCO Japanese, and 195 from Airiti.
For SCP local holding process: OCLC had unexpected issues in the process of transitioning their batchloading services to WorldShare Collection Manager. As a result, local holdings records (LHR) additions and updates to SCP serials in WorldCat Local are on hold. Kate will send a notice to system liaisons once OCLC resolves the issues and the processing begins again.

For DDA programs, 748 titles available from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2014 package (292 titles), 2015 package (352 titles), 2016 package (104 titles); 2,433 titles from the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 1,878 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 168 purchases from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE for year 2013 (104 titles) & 2014 (64 titles), 102 from the EBSCO Japanese, and 194 from Airiti.

For August 2016, we completed cataloging of Taylor & Francis online journal of total 3210 titles, thanks to Becky, Kate, and the rest of CDLA/SCP staff working very hard for the last two months.

For July 2016 monographs distributions, we added a new package Cambridge online monographs (383 titles). Other major monographs packages are: ACM Digital Library online conference proceedings (77 titles), IEEE Xplore online conference proceedings (136 titles), Wiley online monographs (55 titles), and Naxos music library online audio. Jazz(176 titles). The major serial record distributions are: Taylor & Francis online journals (977 titles), EBSCO journals (39 titles), ProQuest journals (361 titles), Open Access journals (76 titles which includes DOAJ 42 titles), and China online journals (37 titles).

SCP Monthly Update. For June 2016 record distributions, we added several new packages of monographs: ASCE (448 titles: 442 titles of conference proceedings and 6 titles of monographs), Cornell University Press online monographs (7 titles), new packages in Springer monographs: Behavioral science and psychology (23 titles), Business and management (64 titles), Economics and finance (61 titles), and Education (32 titles), as well as Airiti PDA 2016 Feb-May (116 titles). Other major monographs packages are: Elsevier (59 titles), IEEE Xplore online conference proceedings (195 titles), NBER working papers (734 titles), SPIE conference proceedings (460 titles), Springer (1518 titles which includes new packages mentioned above), Wiley (140 titles), Apabi (264 titles), and Chinamaxx (339 titles). The major serial record distributions are: EBSCO journals (163 titles which includes newspapers 148 titles), Open Access journals (131 titles which includes DOAJ 71 titles)
SCP started to catalog and distribute titles in several end-of-year purchased packages, such as Cambridge University Press eBooks and Taylor & Francis journals. For CUP titles, 377 records were sent in July. This is less than expected as record discovery procedures had to be modified on the fly after small errors were discovered. For T&F titles, 1400 previously existing T&F titles with the coverage adjusted were sent on July 11, about another 500 T&F titles were added to existed holdings from other publishers or aggregators. So far, among 3176 titles, we have about 700 titles left to catalog. While cataloging, SCP and CDLA staff work as a team to reconcile holdings between SFX, T&F, and “real” holdings. We will include more details in the next monthly update.

For May 2016, a notable new package added is ICPSR online datasets (includes: 9,261 titles of monos, 4 titles of serials, and 5 titles of databases), thanks to UCB’s request to make it a SCP package, taking full advantage of centralized cataloging and record management. Two other new databases added are American doctoral dissertations, 1933-1955, an OA database from EBSCOhost, and Countries, a licensed database from EIU. The major serial record distributions are: Academic search complete (104 titles), Cambridge online journals (22 titles), and China online journals (44 titles); also a redistribution of OA journals (2,262 titles) as a result of a big “drop” in DOAJ and an equally big bump in the “plain” Open access resource; selected by the UC Libraries.The major monographs record distributions are: CRC Press (101 titles), Elsevier (310 titles), IEEE conference proceedings (251 titles), Springer (121 titles), Knovel (41 titles), SPIE (30 titles), CalDocs (42 titles), and Apabi (268 titles)
For DDA programs, 644 titles available from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE 2014 package (292 titles) and 2015- package (352 titles), 2294 titles from the EBSCO Japanese, and 2,297 titles from the Airiti. As of this date, we have recorded 168 purchases from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE for year 2013 (104 titles) & 2014 (64 titles), 102 from the EBSCO Japanese, and 194 from Airiti.
As in past fiscal year endings, CDL is busy finalizing several end-of-year database and package purchases. SCP will prioritize them for cataloging as soon as they are ready, such as Cambridge University Press eBooks and Taylor & Francis journals. Be aware that even after invoices have been paid, there is a certain amount of work to be done to determine the most appropriate cataloging approach and there is always a possibility of technical difficulties causing delays in cataloging.

For the month of April, our major serial record distributions include EBSCO journals (78 titles), JSTOR online journals (55 titles), Superstar Chinamaxx journals (52 titles), and Open Access journals (175 titles, including Gallica online journals, a new package of 10 titles, and DOAJ, 105 titles).
For monographs, the major record distributions include Naxos music library online audio (12,705 titles + Jazz subset of 2,194 titles), Blackwell-Synergy monographs (171 titles), IEEE Xplore online conference proceedings (150 titles), Knowledge Unlatched online monographs (45 titles), Open access monographs (64 titles), SpringerLink monographs (1,609 titles), Wiley online monographs (417 titles), YBP/Ebrary online monographs (87 titles), Superstar Chinamaxx monographs (73 titles).
For DDA programs, 644 titles available from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2014 package (292 titles) and 2015- package (352 titles), 2008 titles from the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 1,726 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 168 purchases from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE for year 2013 (104 titles) & 2014 (64 titles), 102 from the EBSCO Japanese, and 194 from Airiti.
There are two special notes for your attention:
- GMD: Starting in May 2, 2016, records in SCP file distributions will no longer have General Material Designation (GMDs, found in field 245 subfield $h, i.e. 245$h [electronic resource]). All electronic resource records distributed from now on should have 33X fields for content type, media type and carrier type.
- Some of you may have read the DOAJ news on May 2, 2016 that DOAJ removed approximately 2860 journals for failure to submit a valid reapplication before the communicated deadline; a deadline which was extended twice to allow more time for reapplications. SCP had cataloged approximately 2700 of these titles, primarily using BibPurls (example: http://bibpurl.oclc.org/web/12311). This is important because the SFX target for those particular DOAJ titles will be removed later in May and this means that access through UC-eLinks willdisappear on May 23rd unless SFX had also used another flavor of a “free access” target. For now SCP will keep all this group of DOAJ titles with access in place. We recognize that at least temporarily they are no longer in DOAJ. So we will remove the “DOAJ online journals” portion of the title hook from the local 793 title field: “Open access resource; selected by the UC Libraries. DOAJ online journals.” These will be resent on to the campuses on May 23rd. In the future, as the publishers fill out their re-applications and the titles start to reappear in DOAJ, we will update the local title fields and resend. Please report to CDL Helpline if you run into a problem.

For the month of March, our major serial record distributions includes four new packages: American Society for Nutrition online journals (4 titles), ASCE (America Society for Civil Engineers) Library online journals (39 titles), Open Library of Humanities online journals (5 titles), Trans Tech Publications online journals –on material science engineering (13 titles); also the major monographic titles distributed were Literature online (LION) online journals (25 titles), Wiley-Blackwell online journals (54 titles), and Open Access (240 titles). The latter includes 148 DOAJ titles.
For monographs, we have added two new Open Access packages: Open Book Publishers online monographs (68 titles), TransTech monographs –on material science engineering (2328 titles); included also the major monographic titles distributed Materials Research Society online monographs (144 titles), IEEE Xplore online conference proceedings (140 titles) Superstar Chinamaxx monographs (270 titles).
We also added one new database: Open Library of Humanities
For DDA programs, the number bought and distributed remained steady at: 1,286 titles available from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2014 package (585 titles) and 2015- package (701 titles), 4,016 titles from the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 3,437 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 336 purchases from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE for year 2013 (208 titles) & 2014 (128 titles), 204 from the EBSCO Japanese, and 396 from Airiti.
There are two special notes for your attention:
- MeSH change: Due to NLM MeSH change policy and OCLC reloading all NLM records with deconstructed MeSH headings in January, SCP had around 10,000 journals and 5,000 monos that were eligible for MeSH changes. Kate started to change these records when OCLC records change, based on the OCLC record change reports SCP set up via OCLC WMS. Between February and March, about 12,000 records were updated and sent through SCP records distribution.
- CIAO Online journals and monographs: due to the fact that CIAO decommissioned the old site, the access/links to the individual titles have not been available. Without knowing when the title level links restored, CDL has to treat the package as a single database, and all the title level records were removed (serials 31 titles, monographs 222 titles). All records will be redistributed once title level access restored.

Our major serial record distributions for February were Open Access (449 titles), which included DOAJ 279 titles, and JSTOR online journals (67 titles).
For monographs, we have added Elsevier monographs (106 titles), IEEE conference proceedings (212 titles), Naxos music records (692 titles), and SpringerLink monographs (272 titles), and Apabi monographs (192 titles). Of special note this month is JapanKnowledge. The 446 records distributed were created collaboratively by colleagues at Yale University, the University of Toronto, Stanford University, and Washington University in St. Louis.
There are now 1,286 titles available from the CRC Press ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2014 package (585 titles) and 2015- package (701 titles), 4,016 titles from the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 3,437 titles from the Airiti DDA. Our major serial record distributions for January were for Open Access (244 titles) and the Independent Voices records from Reveal Digital (168 titles). The latter package is one that we are working on cooperatively with NSDP (National Serials Data Program) at the Library of Congress. After we finish cataloging the print versions of these journals, we send a spreadsheet of OCLC numbers to NSDP. At this point they create an online version of the print records and add ISSN.
For monographs, we have added Elsevier monographs (86 titles), IEEE conference proceedings (110 titles), Naxos music records (1974 titles), and CalDocs (82 titles). Of special note this month are Superstar Chinamaxx online monographic titles (312). UC Santa Barbara has volunteered to help catalog Chinamaxx, agreeing to catalog Phase 1 of the Chinamaxx. We enthusiastically welcome their assistance.

SCP monthly update January 2016
December 2015 was a short month because of the library closure from December 24th through January 3rd. In addition to that time some of us were off December 21st through December 23rd as well. Nevertheless we did manage to catalog a number of titles. Our major serial record distributions were for BioOne (59 titles), Lexis Nexis (283 titles), Open Access (244 titles), and Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (49 titles). As a serial cataloger, I have noticed a steady uptick in the number of titles from commercial publishers who are either adding new open access titles, converting previous subscription titles, or even making back files open access. For monographs, we added a new package—JapanKnowledge. It is an online web archive that has a large corpus of encyclopedias, dictionaries, reference compilations, and periodical resources from approximately 50 different sources in Japan. In addition we distributed records for CRC Press (86 titles) and IEEE Conference proceedings (114 titles). As for our DDA holdings, we have 1551 DDA titles in Airiti Books; 97 have been purchased. The EBSCO Japanese DDA has 2002 titles available with 88 purchases. As a reminder the YPB/Ebrary DDA pilot has been suspended. In this package there were 578 titles purchased from a total of 4303 titles.
Personnel changes. On April 1, 2016, Adolfo Tarango, the head of the SCP Cataloging Unit will be leaving UC San Diego and the California Digital Library. As a temporary measure his SCP replacement will be Shi Deng. She will be taking on the supervision of the unit in addition to her current position as head of the CJK cataloging. Shi will assume responsibilities for SCP effective March 1st to allow transition time before Adolfo leaves.

Additionally, it is probable that several staff will be taking off December 21-23. As a result, please be aware that during this time period SCP staff’s ability to respond to reported problems will be limited or not possible. SCP staff will address any unresolved issues as quickly as possible after January 3. With regards to the posting of SCP record files, note that the last set of record files for 2015 will be posted on December 21 while the first files of 2016 will be posted January 11.

For monographs they were for NBER Working Papers (466 titles), World Bank Working Papers (464 titles), SuperStar (239 titles), YBP/Ebrary DDA (125 titles), IEEE (138 titles), CRC Press (108 titles), Wiley (94 titles).
DDA offerings continue to grow at a steady pace. Currently 4,377 titles are available through the YBP/Ebrary DDA pilot, 2062 titles from the EBSCO/Japanese DDA, and 1552 titles from the Airiti DDA. Current registered purchases from each of these packages number 249, 48, and 74 titles, respectively.

SCP monthly update October 2015
The first set of records for two new journals packages, Reveal Digital’s Independent Voices and for SAE, went out this past month. You may have seen some press already regarding Independent Voices. This collection consists of alternative press newspapers and journals drawn from the special collections of contributing libraries. The materials themselves represent and were produced by a wide spectrum of groups from the 1960s to 1980s: feminist, the right-wing press, GIs, LGBTs, small literary presses, minority groups. The Independent Voices project itself is an experiment in providing open access to source materials. Based on a crowd-funding model that covers the cost of production, data conversion, hosting services, and management, once sufficient funds are raised, the whole collection will become open access. CDL, on behalf of the UC Libraries, is one of the funding agents for this project.
Our major serial record distributions for September were for Reveal Digital (343 titles), Open Access (304 titles), JSTOR (202 titles), and LexisNexis (31 titles). For monographs they were for Naxos (3,099 titles), YBP/Ebrary DDA (629 titles), Springer (612 titles), Naxos Jazz (483 titles), Airiti PDA (317 titles), Elsevier (106 titles), Wiley (105 titles), California Documents (98 titles), and IEEE (53 titles). SCP monthly update September 2015
The first set of records for two new monographic packages were sent out last month, for Business Expert Press and for the Oxford Literature Handbooks. Business Expert Press promotes itself as providing “… concise, practical, treatments of the topics taught in MBA programs … written by professors who translate real-life business experiences into teaching tools …” The Oxford Literature Handbooks cover various aspects of English poetry, prose, verse, and drama. While currently limited to literature from the British Isles and North American, Oxford plans to include coverage of literature from other English speaking regions.
Also new were titles for the Early American Newspapers series 2. Series 2 contains newspapers mostly from the time period 1820-1860 and as such, providing significant information about the era of American western expansion, slavery, sectionalism, and the Mexican-American War.
Our major serial record distributions for July were for Early American Newspapers Series 2 (289 titles), Open Access (53 titles), and EBSCO (40 titles). For monographs they were for Business Expert Press (362 titles), IEEE (189 titles), EBSCO Japanese DDA (137 titles), Wiley (76 titles), CRC Press (81 titles), and Airiti (70 titles).

We continue work on the end of fiscal year purchases with records for the Oxford Handbooks Online Literature Foundation and Business Expert Press just distributed. Coming later this month will be records for Early American newspapers Series II. Reveal Digital is now live with its new platform which means SCP can start cataloging titles from this package; you can expect to see the first batch of records for them by the end of August.

There are now 3,439 DDA titles available from YBP/Ebrary, 1,962 titles available for the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 1,282 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 249 purchases from YBP/Ebrary, eleven from the EBSCO Japanese, and four from Airiti.
As in past fiscal year endings, CDL is busy finalizing several end-of-year database and package purchases. As these get completed, SCP will prioritize them for cataloging. Some, like the Loeb Classical Library titles, are already being distributed, titles from others such as the Morgan & Claypool Life Sciences Colloquium 3 and the Elsevier Clinics Collection will soon be entering your catalogs. Be aware that even after invoices have been paid, there is a certain amount of work to be done to determine the most appropriate cataloging approach and there is always a possibility of technical difficulties causing delays in cataloging. Assuming no such snags, we anticipate you’ll be seeing all the year-end purchases fully cataloged by the end of August. The major monograph distributions were for Naxos (7485 titles), Naxos Jazz (1327 titles), Knovel (1182 titles), Materials Research Society (288 titles), MIT Press (219 titles), IEEE (197 titles), SPIE (135 titles), EBSCO (118 titles), and CRC Press (94 titles). For serials our major distributions were for Open Access (522 titles), JSTOR (47 titles), and EBSCO (32 titles).
There are now 3,425 DDA titles available from YBP/Ebrary, 1,962 titles available for the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 1,247 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 249 purchases from YBP/Ebrary, eleven from the EBSCO Japanese, and four from Airiti.
Lastly, our package cataloging statistics as of the end of the first quarter 2015 are available from the SCP website. These statistics note the number of titles cataloged in each package and the net change, if any, from the previous quarter. Some notable increases include the addition of 1805 new open access serials and 135 new JSTOR titles. On the monographs side, there were 8811 new audio titles from Naxos, 2765 new Springer titles, 1186 new titles for Knovel, 548 new titles from IEEE, and 862 new monographs from Elsevier including titles in three new subject areas: clinical medicine, health professions, and veterinary medicine.

I’m very pleased to share the news that Becky Culbertson has been named a recipient of the annual Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award. The ALA press release highlights many of her contributions to the field, the benefits of which are well known to us working at SCP and by catalogers across the UC system. It is pleasing to see her dedication and hard work recognized in such a fashion, congratulations Becky.
On to more mundane matters, the major monograph distributions were for Elsevier (860 titles), IEEE (221 titles), CalDocs (104 titles), Wiley (103 titles), Airiti (99 titles), Royal Society of Chemistry (89 titles), Apabi (64 titles), and Springer (62 titles). For serials our major distributions were for Open Access (491 titles), Superstar (188 titles), and JSTOR (88 titles).

SCP monthly update January 2015
Our major monograph distributions for last month included titles for Springer (1,644 titles), Knovel (374 titles), IEEE (158 titles), YBP/Ebrary DDA (144 titles), Wiley (141 titles), and Airiti (61 titles). For serials, our only major distributions were for Open Access resources (512 titles) and EBSCO (20 titles). Several monograph package renewals were completed at the end of the year so we’re now able to send you 2015 content from Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, and SPIE.
For our DDAs, there are now 3,298 titles available from YBP/Ebrary, 1,844 titles available for the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 1,138 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 71 purchases from YBP/Ebrary, eleven from the EBSCO Japanese, and four from Airiti.
Our fourth quarter statistics are now posted, http://www.cdlib.org/2014q4/. These statistics highlight the change from the previous quarter in the number of titles available from each package. For example, nearly 1,200 open access journals and nearly 3,800 Springer monographs were added during the fourth quarter of 2014.
For several months now, we have been assessing the value of using the title update reports from OCLC’s Collection Manager for bibliographic record maintenance. We are pleased to announce that based our analysis and resulting recommendation, Ivy Anderson has approved our use of these reports to identify and perform bibliographic record maintenance on an ongoing basis on reported serials. We have found that on average, about 225 titles per month are being reported. The updates cover a host of important changes such as added or updated access points, record conversions from AACR2 to RDA, title changes, etc. In all, very valuable updates that SCP would not normally catch.

SCP monthly update December 2014
The UCSD campus will be closed from Wednesday, Dec. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 4. SCP operations will cease entirely during this time period. The last file of SCP records for the year will be posted on Dec. 22. The first file of records for 2015 will be posted on Jan. 5.
ProQuest has made available a new set of records for EEBO. They have done some clean-up to previously released records, correcting typos and adding access points. Additionally, they have added about 4,400 new titles. We will be working the SCP Advisory Committee on distributing these updated records to the campuses as soon as possible.
Our major monograph distributions for last month included titles for Springer (877 titles), IEEE (198 titles), YBP/Ebrary DDA (154 titles), Elsevier (142 titles), Apabi (119 titles), and CRC Press (67 titles). For serials, our only major distribution was for Open Access resources (353 titles).

The ASME distribution is the first for the ASME conference proceedings and conference proceedings archives. For serials, we had only one major distribution, for Open Access (562 titles).

For monographs, our major distributions included titles for Naxos (4999 titles), Springer (1402 titles), Wiley (208 titles), IEEE (152 titles), Apabi (100 titles), and YBP/Ebrary DDA (95 titles). For serials, our major distributions were for Open Access (635 titles) and JSTOR (45 titles).
For our DDAs, there are now 2733 titles available from YBP/Ebrary, 1529 titles available for the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 924 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 40 purchases from YBP/Ebrary, eleven from the EBSCO Japanese, and four from Airiti.
The following should not impact campus processing of SCP bibliographic record files, but SCP has started adding a suffix to the OCLC number in its copy of the SCP record. Some of you are aware that the UCSD Library’s ILS serves as the local storehouse of SCP records. Because of this, there are two copies of most records, one is the SCP copy of the record, suppressed from public view, and the second is the UCSD Library’s copy of the record which is the version that displays in Roger, UCSD’s local OPAC. Because there are two copies of each record, this makes it impossible to employ a very important technique for doing bibliographic maintenance, overlay of records based on OCLC number. By adding a suffix to the OCLC number in the SCP copy of the record, this de-duplicates the OCLC number letting us, both UCSD and SCP staff, use it as a matching point for overlay of records. As stated, this will not affect campus processing of SCP records as SCP will strip the suffix from the OCLC number before distributing them, but we wanted to give notice to you and ask to let us know in the event any such record manages to get out to you.

I’m pleased to announce that on August 1st, Kate Garvey-Clasby was promoted to a Library Assistant V position. Being the successful candidate for the posted position, Kate’s responsibilities for batch processes will increase and she now will be able to take on the original cataloging of monographs and serials. Congratulations Kate!
We had only one major distribution for serials last month, for Open Access serials (369 titles). For monographs, our major distributions included titles for YBP/Ebrary DDA (429), SuperStar (267 titles), ASME (147 titles), SPIE (117 titles), IEEE (105 titles), Apabi (79 titles), and CRC Press (55 titles). The ASME monographs distribution was the first for that package.
For our DDAs, there are now 2557 titles available from YBP/Ebrary, 1529 titles available for the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 924 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 40 purchases from YBP/Ebrary, eleven from the EBSCO Japanese, and four from Airiti.
Over the past couple of months, SCP staff has been experimenting with using the OCLC Collection Manager and the OCLC KB. With the Collection Manager, we’ve set up a process to identify SCP records which have been updated in WorldCat. Our preliminary experiences with serials indicate we may have a viable mechanism for doing some important serials maintenance that would otherwise go unnoticed, e.g. serial title changes. With the OCLC KB, we are experimenting with using it to help us identify additions and deletions to a couple of packages. Depending on how that works out, again, we may have uncovered a very useful tool for managing our cataloging work.

The major distributions for serials last month were for Open Access (488 titles), ScienceDirect (52 titles), JSTOR (50 titles), and ASME (49 titles) with those from ASME being the first distributions for that package. For monographs, our major distributions included titles for Open Access (476 titles), Springer (470 titles), Wiley (143 titles), CRC Press (115 titles), IEEE (86 titles), CalDocs (56 titles), and Elsevier (52 titles).
For our DDAs, there are now 2470 titles available from YBP/Ebrary, 1529 titles available for the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 924 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded 40 purchases from YBP/Ebrary, eleven from the EBSCO Japanese, and four from Airiti.
Second quarter 2014, http://www.cdlib.org/2014q2 as well as fiscal year 2013/2014, http://www.cdlib.org/2013-2014, statistics are now posted. Both of these documents show the number of titles cataloged for each package tracked by SCP for the respective time period and gives the number of titles added to each package during the same. To summarize the big picture, for fiscal year 2013/2014, SCP staff added 47 database, 5980 serial, and 71,841 monograph links for licensed and open access resources. As of June 30, 2014, the total number of links numbered 633 for databases, 74,846 for serials, and 659,886 for monographs.
Lastly, a call out to SCP’s Becky Culbertson; she was recently appointed a member of the HathiTrust User Support Working Group. The group’s charge:
- Responds to and ensures ultimate resolution of user inquiries that are received through HathiTrust web interfaces and the HathiTrust contact address. This work is accomplished through the use of a common issue‐tracking system.
- Responds to users directly and mediates resolution of problems and issues with contacts at partner institutions where necessary. Initial responses to inquiries are sent within one business day of receipt and resolved as soon as possible thereafter.
- Works closely with other working groups and committees to direct feedback on particular HathiTrust activities, interfaces, and work products (e.g., PageTurner and search interfaces, webinars, press releases, etc.) to the appropriate channels.
Becky will be working with 11 other folk from HathiTrust member institutions plus two staff from HathiTrust.

Once again the only major distributions for serials were for Open Access (229 titles). For monographs, our major distributions included titles for NBER (883), SuperStar (411 titles), Open Access (224 titles), Wiley (151 titles), World Bank (137 titles), Knovel (134 titles), Safari (98 titles), IEEE (70 titles), Apabi (69 titles), and CRC Press (62 titles).
For our DDAs, there are now 2058 titles available from YBP/Ebrary, 1533 titles available for the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 717 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, we have recorded seven purchases from YBP/Ebrary and the EBSCO Japanese, and four from Airiti.
With the approval of a permanent funding model by the Council of University Librarians, I’m pleased to announce that the temporary Chinese language Cataloger position is now classified as permanent. The approved funding model is structured so that a portion is funded by CDL and the remaining amount is funded by the campuses on a cost share basis. After working on a temporary basis for seven years, I’m very happy to know that our Chinese language cataloger, Bie-Hwa Ma, has finally made the commitment to stick around.

Our past month’s distributions for monographs included titles for Open Access (1195 titles), SuperStar (640 titles), Springer (345 titles), CRC Press (288 titles), Apabi (113 titles), IEEE (76 titles), Wiley (65 titles), and Elsevier (51 titles). The majority of the open access monographs, 843, were from DOAB, Directory of Open Access Books, which was a new package for us. Note that 191 of the CRC Press titles are reinstated titles we had lost over the years but have now recovered per perpetual rights agreements. These titles are hosted locally, in Merritt, and our links will take users to pdf versions of these titles. As such, users will not have use of the vendor’s platform functionality when viewing these specific titles.
For our DDAs, there are currently 1968 titles available from YBP/Ebrary, 1533 titles available for the EBSCO Japanese DDA, and 716 titles from the Airiti DDA. As of this date, there have been seven purchases from YBP/Ebrary and the EBSCO Japanese and four from Airiti.
Our only major distributions for serials were for Open Access (318 titles).
SCP staff are beginning to explore use of the OCLC KB. This is necessitated by the fact that OCLC is changing how we are to create and manage WorldCat Collections Sets. We also believe use of some other services available through OCLC WMS such as the Collection Manager might offer us some additional tools to maintain and update our records. SCP staff have also been enthusiastically participating in the OCLC duplicate record merge pilot, working on both monographs and serials. A shout out to Annie Ross, now off review and merging those pesky dups on her own, yay Annie!

SCP monthly update April 2014
I’m pleased to announce that SCP is now cataloging two high profile open access monographic collections, Knowledge Unlatched and the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). The UC’s are charter members of Knowledge Unlatched, http://www.knowledgeunlatched.org/, a collaborative initiative enabling free access to scholarly monographs. Plans are to release 28 monographs this year under a Creative Commons license. Twenty titles are already available and records for these have already been distributed. A much larger number of titles are available through DOAB. A sibling of DOAJ, this collection currently provides access to over 1,800 titles. DOAB records will be distributed starting next week.
We distributed a significant number of monographs last month. These include titles for National Academies Press (718 titles), ACS symposium series (275 titles), Springer (206), SPIE (152 titles), Elsevier (141 titles), OECD (135 titles), CalDocs (85 titles), Apabi (79 titles), Wiley (77 titles), and IEEE (76 titles). There were also significant distributions in March for our DDA packages: YBP/Ebrary (433 titles), Japanese (1537 titles), and Airiti (50 titles). For journals on the other hand, we had only one, but substantial, distribution, for DOAJ (257 titles). In March we also had the uncommon task of having to remove a significant number of titles from a package. Wiley pulled its content out of Knovel and we remove 519 titles from that package.

SCP monthly update March 2014
All the DDA pilots seem to be going strong. SCP is currently distributing records for four DDA pilots with records distributed for 1243 titles from YBP/Ebrary, 46 titles from CRC Press ENGnetBASE, 713 titles from Airiti, and 1540 titles from the newest pilot, the EBSCO Japanese language pilot. Regarding the CRC Press ENGnetBASE DDA, this was renewed for 2014 but includes titles published in the fourth quarter of 2013. SCP will therefore need to do some clean-up of previously distributed records, updating both the title hook and list of participating campuses.
Our major journal record distributions for February were for Open Access (267 titles), EBSCO Academic Search Complete (230 titles), SAGE (85 titles), JSTOR (45 titles), and DragonSource (43 titles). Additionally, we replaced 96 brief Dacheng records with full records. Our major record distributions for monographs were for Springer (488 titles), IEEE (79 titles), and Morgan & Claypool (66 titles).

SCP monthly update January/February 2014
We had only three major e-book package distributions in January, for Springer (1,121 titles), SuperStar (211 titles), and IEEE (53 titles). There was an overall decrease (117 titles) in the number of CRC Press titles available since we removed 224 titles which had been part of the ENGnetBASE DDA pilot. Note however, that under the terms of the DDA agreement, 46 ENGnetBASE titles will remain available as DDA titles until the end of March.
We had slightly more major journal package record distributions, for EBSCO Education Source (804 titles), EBSCO Art Source (293 titles), Open Access (131 titles), ScienceDirect Freedom Collection (56 titles), DragonSource (52 titles), and IIMP full text (29 titles). The journals in H.W. Wilson’s Education Full Text and Art Full Text were repackaged into EBSCO’s Education Source and Art Source. Also, offsetting the large additions to the two EBSCO packages, there was a decrease of 248 titles available from EBSCO Academic Search Complete.
The Airiti DDA titles currently number 627 and the YBP/Ebrary DDA titles number 1197. We have not yet distributed any DDA titles for the Japanese EBSCO pilot, but plan to do so within the next week or so. We anticipate over 1,500 records for the initial distribution.
Due to circumstances, I was unable to provide you with a monthly update for our December output so I’m including the highlights here. For journals the major distributions were for EBSCO Education Source (293 titles), Open Access (90 titles), and SuperStar (40 titles). Our major distributions for monographs were for Alexander Street Press Classical Music Library (445 titles), JSTOR serial analytics (172 titles), Apabi (90 titles), SuperStar (68 titles), IEEE (61 titles), CRC Press (60 titles), and Wiley (51 titles). The JSTOR serial analytics were for titles from the journals Fieldiana Anthroplogy; Publications of the Field Columbian Museum, Anthropological Series; and, Publications of the Field Museum of Natural History, Anthropological Series.

The major journal package distributions for November were for Open Access (373 tiles), EBSCO (48 titles), JSTOR (35 titles), Project Muse (28 titles), and LexisNexis Academic (27 titles). For monographs, the major distributions were for Naxos Jazz (1569 titles), Knovel (230 titles), SuperStar (139 titles), Springer (135 titles), IEEE (92 titles), Wiley (91 titles), CRC Press (64 titles), and Apabi (52 titles). For our DDA packages, there are now 276 titles available from CRC Press ENGnetBASE and 539 titles from the Airiti DDA.
Speaking of Airiti, the new process of SCP distributing their records is now in place with the November file successfully sent to the campuses. Future files will follow on a monthly basis. More good DDA pilot news, the YBP/Ebrary DDA pilot is back on. SCP staff have worked out the cataloging details and have a tentative date of January 13, 2014, for when the initial load of records will be posted for the campuses to load.
Continuing with the positive news, I’m pleased to report that the NGTS cataloging pilot between UC Irvine and SCP is proving very successful. Hats off to our colleagues at Irvine who so far have cataloged 743 titles. As a result of this success, we plan to expand the pilot to include another set of monographs, those published by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and available via the ACM Digital Library. Staff already are reviewing procedures and we look forward to UCI staff cataloging titles starting in mid- to late January.
Last month I announced that we had revived our general email list SCP-L and that we would be using it as our communication mechanism to and for interested staff. SCP monthly update November 2013
A couple of announcements regarding the Airiti DDA package, first, ongoing problems with the ability of Airiti to provide the DDA records for the campuses necessitated SCP take over the process. Instead of each campus separately acquiring the records from the vendor, SCP will distribute them to the campuses monthly, in a separate file apart from the regular SCP record file. Details will be sent to the appropriate staff at each campus. Secondly, the recent resignation of the Airiti liaison has delayed SCP’s distribution of November’s set of DDA records. This set will be distributed as soon as possible pending orientation of the new liaison to our cataloging process. Regarding another DDA package, the YBP/Ebrary DDA pilot is on indefinite hold pending resolution of some licensing issues. On a more positive note, the number of titles available via the CRC Press ENGnetBASE DDA is 250 while those currently available from Airiti are 523.
SCP has revived its general email list SCP-L. This email list will be used to distribute the SCP Monthly Updates, minutes of the SCP Advisory Committee meetings, the SCP annual report, and other general information regarding SCP operations and SCP cataloged resources. Subscribers can also use the list to ask questions regarding SCP cataloged resources and SCP operations. SCP staff and the members of the SCP Advisory Committee will be monitoring the list so as to be able to address any questions posed on the list. CDL IT staff completed the migration of SCP PID server data to a new service maintained by CDL. While there was a temporary problem right after the migration with some PIDs not resolving correctly, that problem was quickly resolved; all PIDs should be operating correctly. The most significant serial record distributions for October were for Gale Literature Resource Center journals (416 titles) and SpringerLink (104 titles). The Gale journals are the first distributions for that package. For monographs, the major distributions were for World Bank Working Papers (2,813 titles), Springer (340 titles), Alexander Street Press Indian Drama (256 titles), SuperStar (146 titles), Alexander Street Press Scottish Women Poets of the Romantic Period (90 titles), IEEE (83 titles), and CRC Press (51 titles). The Alexander Street Press titles are also the first distributions for those specific ASP databases.

The major monograph distributions were for the Alexander Street Press Classical music library (2385 titles), SuperStar (289 titles), Wiley (163 titles) and IEEE (109 titles).For our two DDA pilots, the CRC Press ENGnetBASE DDA selections now total 184 titles and the Airiti DDA offerings comprise 520 titles. Note there have already been 14 Airiti titles purchased. The vendor records for these purchased titles will be replaced with OCLC records.

SCP monthly update September 2013
It appears that CDL will be moving forward with a DDA pilot with YBP/Ebrary. Therefore, SCP expects to start distributing OCLC records for these DDA titles sometime in the next several weeks. The records will be distributed with our regular distributions and the records will include the 793 hook “UC Ebrary DDA pilot.” The estimate is that the first distribution will number about 2,400 titles and that subsequent distributions will number about a dozen per week. We found OCLC records for every title from the sample of titles provided by YBP; however, if this pattern doesn’t hold true for the actual title set selected, we will create brief level “3” records for those titles not found in OCLC. SCP will attach each subscribing campus’ XXXER holding symbol so the titles will show as being held the campuses. At the point of purchase, SCP will review the cataloging, enhance the records as needed, and redistribute records as updates. The redistributed records should overlay the previously distributed DDA records and will have a new 793 title hook “Ebrary online monographs.”
Due to various problems with the first set of Airiti DDA vendor records the campuses retrieved, subscribing campuses will need to delete that set of records when the next set of records are made available from Airiti. Full instructions will be distributed to the subscribing campuses at the appropriate time.
Naxos has grouped its jazz recordings into a separate package. CDL staff fixed the immediate linking problem on September 20th. SCP will work on retagging and then redistributing the titles moved into the Naxos Jazz collection. The Naxos Jazz collection records will have a new 793 hook, “Naxos music library online audio $p Jazz.” Note, while Naxos is calling this a jazz collection, it appears that the criteria for what they are including in the collection is somewhat loose. We have found non-jazz titles included and have found jazz titles left in the original collection. However, if you find a link that resolves to the wrong collection, please let us know.
The JSC approved title level cataloging for the journals in Gale’s Literature Resources Center. There are about 500 titles currently available and you should expect these titles to start showing up in your catalogs in the coming month.
The DDA pilots have become of some import and I’ve been asked to call them out specifically in our monthly updates. As of this writing we have two active DDA pilots. The CRC Press ENGnetBASE DDA currently contains 179 titles. SCP checks for and adds any new titles on a weekly basis. The Airiti DDA now includes 431 titles. Airiti, the vendor, will make records for newly added titles available on a monthly basis.
Last month we distributed the first set of journal titles from NOW Publisher, 23 of them. Other significant serial distributions were for China Online Journals (64 titles), Open Access (52 titles), China Academic Journals (38 titles), and SuperStar (32 titles). The major monograph distributions were for the NBER Working Papers (1617 titles), Karger (620 titles), Springer (296 titles), SuperStar (177 titles), Safari (135 titles), Wiley (103 titles), CRC Press (96 titles), and IEEE (83 titles). Two new monographic packages were added last month. The Synthesis Collection 5 (32 titles), from Morgan & Claypool, expands our selection of engineering and computer science monographs from this publisher. Literature Online added a set of audio recordings of Shakespearean plays (38 titles). The performers include actors trained at the Royal Shakespeare Company such as Joseph Fiennes and Sir John Gielgud. The recordings apparently include the appropriate sound effects and music, so make a date and listen to Anthony and Cleopatra. I hear that story has a happy ending.

SCP monthly update August 2013
Folks interested in our online music resources will be pleased to note that SCP sent out 29,313 records for titles in the Naxos Music Library. And because OCLC is now engaged in a concerted effort to catalog the titles in Naxos, SCP will be able to provide records for this collection on a more regular basis. Users of early published resources will be pleased to know that records for the Nineteenth Century Collection Online were also sent out last month. Records for 12,991 monographs and 260 serials were sent to the campuses. This resource complements our ECCO, EEBO, and Early American Imprints digital collections, giving users online access to a vast corpus of early printed materials.
As to other notable distributions, for monographs these include IEEE conference proceedings (543 titles), Springer (364 titles), OECD (160 titles), World Bank (128 titles), SPIE conference proceedings (118 titles), Wiley (82 titles), CRC Press (66 titles), Harvard University Press (62 titles), and Open Access (50 titles). For serials the only other notable distributions were for Open Access (96 titles) and Krager (46 titles).

SCP monthly update July 2013
The significant record distributions for June include the following for journals: Open Access (307 titles), Wiley-Blackwell (45 titles), and JSTOR (33 titles). We had one new monographs package, MIT Press, for which 468 records were sent out. These titles are provided via the IEEE platform and cover a wide range of subject areas. The remaining significant monograph distributions were for Springer (353 titles), Wiley (227 titles), SuperStar (137 titles), CRC Press (95 titles), Knovel (90 titles), CalDocs (73 titles), Harvard University Press (71 titles), and IEEE (60 titles).
Cumulative cataloging totals for the second quarter of 2013 are posted at http://www.cdlib.org/2013q2. During this last quarter, SCP staff added new links for 8,400 journals, 2 databases, and 6,222 monographs. Also posted are the annual cumulative totals for each package, http://www.cdlib.org/2012-2013. For the fiscal year, the net increases in links provided were 10,598 for journals, 15 for databases, and 59,552 for monographs.
SCP will be cleaning-up its various email lists. The scope and use of each list, SCP-L, SCPSTEERING-L, SCPSYS-L, and SCPCAT-L, has been review and clarified. SCPCAT-L will be retired since we determined it was no longer needed. SCP-L will remain SCP’s public email list, open to all who wish to receive information about SCP such as these monthly updates, copies of SCP’s annual report, the minutes of the SCP Advisory Committee, and similar reports and notices. SCPSTEERING-L and SCPSYS-L will be closed lists. We hope to rename SCPSTEERING-L as SCPAC-L to reflect the current name of the Advisory Committee and this list will be used by the SCP AC to conduct its business. SCPSYS-L will be used for communications between SCP staff and select campus staff regarding systems related issues. Over the next month or two, current subscribers of each of these lists will get notices outlining their subscription status. Please bear with us as we make the necessary updates.

SCP monthly update June 2013
The NGTS cataloging pilot reached a milestone on Monday, June 10th, when SCP distributed the first set of records cataloged by staff at UC Irvine, about 170 Wiley e-books. UCI will continue sending SCP records every couple of weeks.
For journals, EBSCO (165 titles), JSTOR (130 titles), Open Access (119 titles), ScienceDirect (58 titles), and Wiley-Blackwell (29 titles) represented our highest distributions. Springer once again topped the list for the most monograph titles distributed – 472. Our other significant monograph distributions were for SuperStar (433 titles), CRC Press (106 titles), IEEE (79 titles), and ScienceDirect analytics (53 titles). For CRC Press titles you’ll find that several new 793 hooks are being used in order to track and distinguish the 2013 purchases from past acquisitions. These new 793s parallel existing 793s except that “2013-” has been appended at the end of the older hook, e.g.:

SCP monthly update May 2013
Last month Springer topped our list for most titles distributed, 2731, which included the first titles sent, 41, for the newest Springer subject collection, Energy monographs. These include all the recently licensed 2013 titles published to date. Following it, our other significant distributions were for Wiley (309 titles), IEEE (87 titles), and SuperStar (85 titles). For journals, EBSCO (161 titles), Open Access (126 titles), Wiley (62 titles), and Cambridge (31 titles) represented our highest distributions.
On Tuesday, May 14th, SCP posted a file of records for the Dacheng journals, 6,971 titles. These are brief records that SCP created from available vendor data. Over time, the campuses will receive full-level OCLC records to replace these brief records. The replacement of records will be done per the standard SCP process for the replacement of records: the replaced record will be redistributed as a delete and the new record sent coded as new.

SCP monthly update April 2013
Some interesting developments and cancellations have kept us on our toes the last few months. Changes involving the CRC Press NETBASES are without a doubt the most complicated of these. As it stands now, the NETBASES can be broken out into six groups. The first is CHEMnetBASE which was renewed without change and as such you should see no difference in how it is being cataloged. The second group is ENGnetBASE which, for 2013, became our first Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) package. SCP created a new 793 to track the DDA titles, “CRC Press. ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2013.” This is a systemwide DDA pilot and as of this writing, 23 titles have been distributed to all the campuses.
While paid for by a subset of campuses, all the campuses will be getting records for titles in the third group of NETBASES, consisting of ENVIROnetBASE, MATHnetBASE, and STATSnetBASE. Since all the campuses are receiving records, we are not tagging titles with any new 793. Three campuses subscribed to BIOMEDICALSCIENCEnetBASE, group four, so SCP will provide catalog records to Davis, Irvine, and San Diego for these titles. The fifth group consists of those NETBASES which campuses have locally subscribed to. Because less than three campuses are subscribing to these NETBASES, SCP will not be cataloging them; it will be the responsibility of the subscribing campuses to cataloging these locally licensed resources.
The sixth group of NETBASES consists of those from which campuses have chosen to selectively purchase individual titles. As with the locally subscribed NETBASES noted above, it will be the responsibility of the individual campuses to catalog these titles. But a note of caution, many titles from CRC Press are made available in multiple NETBASES. SCP strongly advises campuses put in place a mechanism for checking to see if any of these selected titles are available from already licensed NETBASES. Lastly, be advised that SCP will continue to be responsible for catalog maintenance on any CRC Press titles we originally cataloged regardless of whether the systemwide subscription to the specific NETBASE was cancelled and/or because cataloging of the new content is being done locally.
SCP has been working on providing records for the Nineteenth Century Collection Online. When ready, the records will be distributed to the campuses as a separate file. SCP is also busy with the creation of records for titles in the Chinese language resource Dacheng. For this package, the East Asian Bibliographers Group and the SCP Advisory Committee approved an initial distribution of brief records, to be replaced at a later date with full catalog records. About 7000 journal titles will be distributed with the records likely to contain no more data than a title, a 793 hook, and an 856 with corresponding URL.
Another Chinese language resource we are working on is the Airiti package. This also happens to be a DDA pilot. A significant departure from past practice will be that Airiti records will be distributed by the vendor directly to the campuses. SCP has worked with the vendor so they can provide usable MARC records. At the point of actual purchase, the corresponding vendor record will be replaced by fully cataloged OCLC record. Notice to delete the vendor record and distribution of the new record will be accomplished using standard procedures.
SCP and UCI cataloging staff are in the midst of planning a NGTS cataloging pilot whereby UCI catalogers will catalog titles from the Wiley O-book package. SCP will continue to be responsible for distributing the records. We look to develop a seamless workflow process that will result in a faster turnaround time for these titles with minimal intervention on the part of SCP. Because UCI catalogers will follow all relevant SCP cataloging practices and procedures, records should be indistinguishable from previously cataloged SCP records. Campuses should treat them as any other SCP records, and in fact, the records will be included in the regular SCP record files. SCP will be responsible for any subsequent record maintenance so campuses can continue using existing problem reporting procedures if need be.
Cataloging gains for the first quarter of 2013 totaled 774 serials, 4 integrating resources, and 8,357 monographs. Major additions for serials include those for Academic Search Complete (412 titles) and Open Access (356 titles) of which 234 were for DOAJ titles. For monographs, the most significant gains were to Early American Imprints Series I (2249 titles), IEEE conference proceedings (1424 titles), SuperStar (1265 titles), SpringerLink (576 titles), National Academies Press (373 titles), Wiley (314 titles), CalDocs (309 titles), Apabi (144 titles), CRC Press (82 titles), AIP conference proceedings (75 titles), and Knovel (74 titles). We had one new package, the ACS Symposium Series (1091 titles). December was a short work month but some significant distributions were made. For monographs, the major distributions were to SPIE conference proceedings (213 titles), CRC Press (208 titles), Knovel (204 titles), Gale Mexican and Central American political and social ephemera (158 titles), IEEE conference proceedings (71 titles), Apabi E-books (69 titles), and Springer (62 titles). Also distributed was the first set of records for the Cambridge companions to literature (217 titles) from Literature Online. Serial record distributions included Open Access (89 titles), Academic Search Complete (81 titles), and DragonSource (31 titles).
During the fourth quarter of 2012, SCP added access for 894 serials and 7,202 monographs. There were 4 new serial and 8 new monograph packages established for catalog tracking purposes. These included entries for the Cambridge Companions to Literature, IET Library, Scribner Writers, Twayne’s Authors, and ASTM. The complete statistics for the number of titles cataloged for each SCP package are now posted on the SCP website http://www.cdlib.org/2012q4. The statistics in this document show the total number of titles cataloged for each package as of December 16, 2012, as well as the net change from the previous quarter, if any.

The UCSD campus will be closed December 24-January 1. Additionally, individual staff may be taking additional time off January 2-4. Be advised therefore, that any questions or issues directed to SCP or CDL Acquisitions during this time period may not be addressed until after January 7. The last SCP record files for 2012 will be posted on December 17. The first files for 2013 will be posted on January 7.

We sent out the first records for Gale’s Scribner Writers series (68 titles). Complementing Gale’s Twayne’s Authors series, titles in the Scribner series provide bio-critical essays on the lives and works of more than 1,400 authors from around the world. Entries include essays, citations, and biographical information that place an author’s work in personal and historical context.

The major serial record additions for the past month were to Academic Search Complete (177 titles), Open Access (147 titles), JSTOR (94 titles), and DragonSource (26 titles). For monographs, the major distributions were to SPIE conference proceedings (645 titles), Classical Music Library (592 titles), Open access (179 titles), Springer (143 titles), CRC Press (128 titles), Wiley (111 titles), and IEEE conference proceedings (102 titles).
We sent out the first records for Gale’s Twayne’s Authors series (866 titles). This series provides literary criticism, biographical and historical information, and original commentary on a wide variety of authors and literary works. We also sent out the first serial (9 titles) and monograph (1280 titles) records for American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) resources. ASTM is a tier 2 resource with the Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, LA, Merced, Santa Barbara, and San Diego Libraries subscribing. Note that SCP will only be cataloging the journals and e-books, the ASTM standards will not be cataloged.

SCP monthly update October 2012
SCP’s latest annual report (http://www.cdlib.org/scpannualreport20112012) is posted on the SCP website. The report contains significant details on our cataloging activities for the 2011/2012 fiscal year, the most significant of these arguably being that SCP surpassed the half-million mark of unique titles cataloged, 567,011. Of these, 527,297 were monographs, 39,063 were serials, and 651 were integrating resources. Considered over the 12.5 year span of the Program, this means SCP staff has cataloged an average of 45,361 titles per year. I highly encourage you to read the report and see what other accomplishments were performed by our six member team.
SCP catalogers attended an RDA serials cataloging webinar and now will create RDA serial records when appropriate. SCP is already cataloging integrating resources in RDA. Training for RDA monographs cataloging is scheduled for February 2013.
September record distribution highlights for serials were Early English Books serials (46 titles), Open Access (43 titles), JSTOR (38 titles), DragonSource (31 titles), and American Periodical Series (25 titles). We had a significant loss of titles (200) from EBSCO Academic Search Complete due to EBSCO losing access to all the Taylor & Francis journals. Highlights for monographs are Springer (294 titles), American Geophysical Union (256 titles), Knovel (239 titles), Apabi (224 titles), Harvard University Press (143 titles), Wiley (88 titles), and IEEE (83 titles). We distributed 43 records for a new package, Momentum Press. This package contains manufacturing, mechanical, civil, environmental technology, and materials science and engineering books. The Harvard University Press titles, which cover of wide span of topics in the humanities and social sciences, also represent a new package, however only Berkeley, Davis, Los Angeles, and San Diego are subscribers.

SCP monthly update September 2012
Serial distributions highlights for August were Open Access (58 titles) and EBSCO Academic Search Complete (26 titles). Monograph record distributions were much more substantial and included Springer (892 titles), ACM Digital Library (639 titles), Apabi (234 titles), IEEE (104 titles), and Berg Fashion Library (69 titles). The Berg Fashion Library is a new package but is only subscribed to by three campuses — Davis, Irvine, LA. It provides integrated text and image content on world dress and fashion throughout history and should prove an invaluable resource for anyone interested in apparel.
All the campuses have acknowledged receipt of the EEBO monograph records on CD-ROM. We will therefore be distributing the EEBO serials records next Monday, September 17th. This file will go out in place of our regularly distributed SCP serial file. The file will only contain EEBO serial records and all will be coded as “New” in the 599 field. Some of these will contain additional 856 fields because they also happen to be available from other providers.
UCSD is steadily moving forward with RDA training and the SCP catalogers are getting trained along with their UCSD colleagues. SCP catalogers have already completed RDA NACO training and are now creating all new headings in RDA and RDA headings are being added to SCP records as appropriate. SCP catalogers are now also creating integrating resource records in RDA (though only one has been done to date). We hope to make the transition to cataloging monographs in RDA along with UCSD, with a target date of January 1, 2013. SCP staff is working with Valerie Bross and Melissa Beck at UCLA and Renee Chin at UCSD on training and transitioning to RDA cataloging for serials. We have no timeline set for that transition, but we are working to move in tandem with CONSER.

The new EEBO monograph records have been sent to each of the campuses on CD-ROM. When we receive confirmation from every campus that they have received their CD-ROM, we will prep the EEBO serials for distribution. Since SCP will distribute actual OCLC records for the serials, the new serial records will be distributed as one of the regular SCP weekly serial files. This SCP serial file will contain only the new EEBO serials. We will send an announcement prior to distributing the EEBO serials.
Serial distributions highlights for July were EBSCO Academic Search Complete (328 titles), Open Access (106 titles), and Royal Society of Chemistry (59 titles). Monograph records distributed include Gale Selections from Sabin Americana (1296 titles), Springer (926 titles), Royal Society of Chemistry (515 titles), World Bank (471 titles), American Geophysical Union (314 titles), SuperStar (201 titles), Apabi (157 titles), IEEE (116 titles), CRC Press (85 titles), Safari (74 titles), Wiley (59 titles), Cal Docs (54 titles), and Knovel (51 titles). The monograph and serial Royal Society of Chemistry titles were for the newly acquired RSC eBook collection. Also a new collection is Selections from Sabin Americana which is another component of Gale’s World Scholar: Latin America and the Caribbean. Here are found primary source materials published in the period 1500-1926 and covering a very broad range of subject areas.

SCP monthly update June/July 2012
SCP staffer Kate Garvey-Clasby is in the middle of processing the new EEBO records. Our plans for distributing them to the campuses are to send the monograph records on CD-ROM. For the serials however, SCP had distributed actual OCLC records for them, so we will do the same for the new set of serial records. These will be distributed in one of the regular SCP weekly serial files. We will let you know which one. We recommend you delete all your EEBO records, monographs and serials, before you load any of the new EEBO records. We will not distribute the serial records until we know everyone has received the CD-ROM of monograph records so that you can time the deletions and additions of records to minimize the time period your catalogs lack EEBO records.
We were notified by a UCSD staff member that we distributed some records derived from RDA print records. Doing so was not an issue except that the ones he found had the 3XX fields for the print instead of the online. SCP is reviewing its records to identify those we have derived from RDA records and will correct and redistribute them as necessary. We believe all other elements in records derived from RDA records should be fine; however, if you find to the contrary, please let us know.
As I did not send out an update for June, here are the distributions highlights for May, for serials those were Springer (431 titles), American Periodical Series (415 titles), and DragonSource (185 titles); for monographs they were NBER Working Papers (1921 titles), Mexican and Central American Political and Social Ephemera (1148 titles), Springer (244 titles), Wiley (195 titles), Apabi (146 titles), IEEE (114 titles), and Knovel (79 titles).
The Mexican and Central American Political and Social Ephemera collection was a new package and is one of several collections within Gale’s World Scholar: Latin America and the Caribbean. This ephemera collection is from the Library of Congress and contains materials on political and social movements that were printed in Mexico and Central America. The items are mostly from the period 1980-1991 with topics covered including public health, church work, political campaigns, “disappeared” persons, AIDS, the role of women, and ecology.
Notable monograph record distributions for the month of June were for Latin American and Iberian biographies (967 titles), Wiley (137 titles), Apabi (154 titles), CRC Press (66 titles), and IEEE (63 titles). For serials they were for American Periodical Series (162 titles) and JSTOR (105 titles). The Latin American and Iberian Biographies is a new package and is also one of several collections within Gale’s World Scholar. This specific collection contains biographical pamphlets from the Library of Congress of Hispanic and Portuguese individuals of the period 1778-1987.

SCP monthly update May 2012
SCP is now regularly distributing the SCP files in Unicode. Many thanks to the campus staff who help us troubleshoot encountered problems. With the switch to Unicode, campuses should no longer be seeing diacritic display problems, if you spot any, please let us know. With this transition now behind us, SCP staff are preparing the EEBO records for distribution. Eventually these will be distributed to the campuses on a CD-ROM. There is a possibility we will get the records ready for you before ALA annual, but more likely you’ll be getting them after.
Last month we distributed the first set of records for three Alexander Street Press music collections: American Song (3230 titles), Contemporary World Music (938) titles, and Smithsonian Global Sound (2479 titles). American Song contains music by and about diverse population groups such as children, cowboys, American Indians, and slaves. The topical scope is diverse as well covering areas such as Civil Rights, Prohibition, political campaigns, and the Civil War and American Revolution. Check out Johnny Cash signing one of my favorites “The Battle of New Orleans.”
Contemporary World Music, as the name suggests, includes musical genres from across the world: flamenco, Arab swing, reggae, gospel, Balkanic jazz to highlight the breath of content. Australian Aboriginal? Yep, have a listen. Smithsonian Global Sound provides an equally encyclopedic selection of music though perhaps, more unusual — the Toilet Song, rendered for your listening pleasure by Doc Tommy Scott, or contralto Marian Anderson singing on Snoopycat: The Adventures of Marian Anderson’s Cat Snoopy. SCP monthly update April 2012
Last month we distributed the first set of records for the Alexander Street Press collection Theatre in Video (350 titles). This is also the first time SCP has distributed bibliographic records for videos. Theatre in Video contains performances of plays and film documentaries. Included are live television broadcasts of New York productions from the 1950s, experimental performances from the 1960s and 70s, and revivals of classical works. The collection contains performances from as early as the 1930s.
Other major monograph distributions for the month were for Open access (801 titles, of which 782 were National Academy Press titles), Springer (486 titles), Wiley (136 titles), ACM (124 titles), IEEE (121 titles), and Apabi (52 titles). The only significant serial distributions were for Open access (147 titles), most of which were DOAJ titles.
In response to a request from CDL’s Joint Steering Committee, quarterly package cataloging statistics now show if a package’s title count showed a net increase or net decrease from the previous quarter. The first quarter statistics are posted at http://www.cdlib.org/2012q1. Additionally, the Chinese language packages are grouped together and presented at the end after the statistics for California documents. We hope these changes will help make our work efforts more visible and allow you to find information of interest more quickly, let us know if we have.
SCP is now ready to move forward on the Unicode transition. Test files have been posted for each of the campuses which contain records for the same set of titles we sent for testing earlier this year. The files include Chinese records with problem characters, a record in each JACKPHY language except Yiddish, and records in Cyrillic, Thai, and Vietnamese, as well as a few Western European languages. The records contain a 599 with the text UPD |b Unicode test |c 120419. A text file of the records is provided for comparison purposes. Please report any problems you have with the test file records to either Kate <kgarveyclasby@ucsd.edu> or Adolfo <atarango@ucsd.edu> within the next three weeks. The timeline below list the type of files you will be receiving over the next several weeks. Assuming no problems are reported, permanent distribution of the SCP files in Unicode will commence with the files posted on May 14, 2012.

SCP monthly update March 2012
Our highest record distributions for serials in February were Open Access (201 titles), DragonSource (104 titles), Sage (46), Taylor & Francis (28), and LexixNexis (24 titles). The DragonSource distributions are the first for that package. This is a Chinese language Tier 2 resource for which titles are individually selected by the subscribing campuses’ bibliographers. DragonSource is a full-text database of popular Chinese-language magazines and journals published in China after 1997. The journals included cover a wide scope of subject areas: politics, economics, literature, arts, philosophy, history, society, popular science, military science, education, family, recreation, health, and fashion. Both text and audio versions are provided.
The primary monographic record distributions were for Springer (454 titles), ACM (385 titles), CRC Press (356 titles), Apabi (234 titles), Knovel (179 titles), IEEE (137 titles), CIAO (102 titles), Alexander Street Press (95 titles), and CalDocs (39 titles). Almost all the Alexander Street Press titles are for the collection Women and Social Movements in the United States, the first distribution for that collection. Items in this collection cover the span of years from 1600 to 2000.
SCP continues consulting with III and UCSD staff on transitioning to Unicode. At this point we appear to have the problems identified and a solution is in the works. We are hoping III will implement its solution soon. Once that is done, we will announce a new timetable for our transition which will include time for sending another test file.

SCP monthly update January/February 2012
Since I was unable to provide you with a monthly update in January, this update covers work output for December 2011 and January 2012. Our December monographic output highlights include Springer (875 titles), Safari (106 titles), and IEEE (98 titles). December serial output highlights include the 19th Century U.S. Newspapers (661 titles), Open Access (172 titles), JSTOR (133 titles), and EBSCO (78 titles). These December distributions represent ongoing additions to existing collections.
January’s output highlights for monographs are Springer (2997 titles), 17th-18th Century Burney Collection (405 titles), Apabi (201 titles), SPIE (192 titles), Wiley (155 titles), and IEEE (115 titles). Highlights in serials distributions are 17th-18th Century Burney Collection newspapers (683 titles), Open Access (220 tiles), ProQuest (48 titles), EBSCO (92 titles), JSTOR (25 titles). Except for the Burney Collection titles, the distributions represent additions to existing packages.
The 17th-18th Century Burney Collection monographs and serials represent the first (and final) such distributions for this package. Per Gale’s description of this collection, the newspapers and news pamphlets were gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817) and represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media. The newspapers and news pamphlets were published mostly in London, but there are also some English provincial, Irish, and Scottish papers, and a few examples from the American colonies, Europe and India. As indicated, some of these titles are news pamphlets and news books. The collection also contains a smattering of broadsides, proclamations, addresses, and acts of Parliament. These titles are represented by monographic records, hence why you are receiving both serial and monographic records for this collection.
In other news, SCP is still working on transitioning to distributing records in Unicode. We are working on issues identified by UC Berkeley and hopefully will have them resolved by the end of the month. Once that is done, we will announce a new timetable for our transition. In the meantime, the SCP records will continue to be sent in MARC8. The wait to transition to Unicode is holding up distribution of the EEBO records. After we switch over to Unicode, we will send each of you the file of EEBO records on disc.
