SCP Program Update October-December 2007

SourceOECD. This is a library of statistical databases, books and periodicals from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. It is not a new database for most campuses, but what is new is the fact that, except for Berkeley and Santa Cruz, who receive it from other vendors, this Tier 2 resource is now handled through CDL. SCP will continue to supply cataloging records to all campuses who get the database, regardless of whether they participate through CDL.

Serial and database news :

We are continuing to focus most of our cataloging efforts on the LexisNexis database . Even though the database seems to be growing exponentially (it now stands at 12,652 resources, with 3039 titles added in October, 2007 alone), the number of journals with ISSN remains at a relatively modest 2276 titles. We have now cataloged over 1400 of them. I like to see what is new by looking at the “Month Added” column in the LexisNexis A-Z list at http://www.amdev.net/rpt_std_content.php We are still directing patrons directly to LexisNexis, but hope to be able to use SFX soon. One new database was distributed recently—Global Financial Data (all campuses except UCSF).

Monographs :

No new packages have come our way, but we have cataloged substantial numbers of monographs in the following packages: ACM Digital Library, American Institute of Physics conference proceedings, CRC Press, Knovel, and SourceOECD. In the next quarter, we will be focusing on the SPIE Digital Library conference proceedings and IEEE.

Other news :

Some of us have been busy working towards getting holdings symbols set for our SCP records in OCLC for the WorldCat Local pilot project. OCLC has created new symbols for which will be attached to records for the consortially licensed electronic content distributed by SCP to each campus. There is one for each campus: CUYER (Berkeley), CUVER (Davis), CUIER (Irvine), CLUER (UCLA), MERER (Merced), CRUER (Riverside), CUSER (San Diego), CUNER (San Francisco), CUTER (Santa Barbara), and CUZER (Santa Cruz). For the pilot, SCP will be sending OCLC a file of all SCP serial records plus SCP record files for the following monographic packages: Early American Imprints, eScholarship Editions, LION, MIT CosSci Collection, Oxford Reference Online Premium, and AIP conference proceedings. Once there OCLC will attempt to match our records with the appropriate OCLC record and set holdings for each subscribing campus using the new symbols. We will receive back from OCLC files of matched records and (hopefully much smaller) files of unmatched records. Most importantly, for any title for which we did not originally have OCLC numbers, we will get back an appropriate correct “new” OCLC number. In the next few weeks, we will be working with the campuses to determine the most effective way to add this new OCLC record number information to each campus’ SCP record. We recognize that it is critical that the OCLC number for the appropriate electronic edition be in each campus’ SCP record as WorldCat local will use the OCLC number to link to the record in the local campus OPACS.

SCP Program Update July-September 2007

LexisNexis Online Journals. At present we have distributed over 600 titles. We are using PIDs in them at this point, but expect to change to SFX UCe-Links eventually. There are two elements holding up distribution of further titles (both are out of our control). The first is that titles distributed by 3 rd party aggregators in LexisNexis are difficult to search on a per-title basis as the search results bring in other titles. This is high on the priority list to fix at LexisNexis. The second element is that even though the SFX KB (KnowledgeBase) will support the new LexisNexis Academic universe, we are waiting for the revised LexisNexis target parser in the September revision . A n even more enhanced parser is expected in the October revision.

Serial and database news :

Besides beginning the cataloging of the LexisNexis database, most of our efforts with serials this quarter went into adding new titles and updating holdings of titles in existing databases. A significant number of titles have been added to the Applied Science and Technology database and the WilsonWeb Art full text. One new database distributed during this time frame is the AltPressIndex (and archive). We have noticed that bloggers have made their way into the aggregator databases. A new small database that we are cataloging—EBSCO Regional Business News has over 200 blogs listed and LexisNexis encompasses 326 blogs. At the moment, SCP will not comprehensively be cataloging blogs, however; the ISSN Center is planning on selectively assigning ISSN numbers and cataloging some blogs. Records for these select blogs will be distributed by SCP when part of SCP packages.

Monographs:

We have distributed our first non-textual set of records—for the Naxos Music Library. We have been using SFX OpenURLs in these records—the first time that we have used SFX OpenURLs in resources other than serials. Recently, the UC music librarians have brought to our attention a variety of concerns regarding the display of certain data elements and the SFX menu. We are actively working to address the concerns raised and will resolve them as soon as possible. A note of explanation about our use of the SFX UC-eLinks is perhaps in order. There is a UC-wide policy decision that SCP uses SFX OpenURLs whenever possible so as to provide users a uniform link resolution service experience. For serials, there is the added benefit that Ex Libris maintains the URLs through their KnowledgeBase thereby relieving SCP of that workload. With the Naxos library, besides the basic policy, there is a technical reason for using the SFX OpenURLs. For this database, each campus has a unique URL for every title. As the resource is currently configured, if we did not use the SFX OpenURL, SCP catalogers would have to distribute a separate file of records to every campus with their unique URLs. With the use of the SFX OpenURL , SCP can put in one SFX URL and each campus will read it to be their own their individual URL. The UC-eLinks work, but it is necessary to go through the SFX menu screen and , as noted, there are issues to resolved with that screen.

We have updated our distribution list for the SCP update. If you are receiving this update and do not wish to, please contact me so I may remove you from the list. Conversely, if there is someone you wish added to the list, please consult with them and ask them to send me an email so I may add them. Also, I will return to publishing this update on a monthly basis again; however, I will only be providing the package title list statistic s quarterly, in the March, June, September, and December updates. As a final “revamping” of the Update, I will be fine tuning the formatting of the package title list statistics slightly for clarity.

SCP Program Update April-June 2007

Serial and database news:

Besides the T&F package, we have completed cataloging on the WilsonWeb Library literature & information science journal package (108 titles for all campuses), CINAHL plus with full text (459 titles for UCI, UCLA, and UCSD), International index to black periodicals (90 titles for all campuses). Work is progressing on additional records for WilsonWeb Art index and Webspirs Applied Science & Technology Index. We have a source of MARC records for the LexisNexis journals (and monographs) and will begin working on them soon. New databases for this period are the Black Studies Center from ProQuest and the Oxford African American studies center, Latin America data base (includes SourceMex, NotiCen and NotiSur), and Rand California. Monographs:

The URL snag with the URLs is still with us for the ECCO (Eighteenth Century Collections Online). I hope this will be resolved soon so that we can distribute the records. One very large set of monographs that was distributed during this quarter was the NBER working paper series. Besides the usual large number of conference proceedings, this quarter will see us working on the World Bank e-Library and the Making of the Modern Economy database package of monographs (UCB, UCI, UCLA, and UCSC only). Plus we will be distributing records for the Naxos Music Library, now that the records are back from our authority vendor.

LINK to package titles statistics

CiNii (Citation Information by National Institute of Informatics). CiNii is a Japanese language database that is a component part of GeNii (Global environment for networked intellectual information). CiNii enables the user to to search both academic journals published by academic societies and research bulletins published by universities, etc., and then to follow up on references to discover what sort of documents are referenced by the document found, and what sort of documents are referencing the document found, and also enables access to the full text of documents. Serial and database news:

In this quarter we have been cataloging the 1100 title journal package from Taylor & Francis journals. Access was licensed and effective in February 2007. So far we have sent out records for about 60% of them and increase this total every week. Access is also available (but not yet cataloged) for Collection 5 of the Periodical Archive Online (PAO) journals. As we near the end of the year, our colleagues in Oakland have been busy negotiating on our behalf a number of databases– available now: Encyclopedia of Women & Islamic Cultures http://uclibs.org/PID/113652, Encyclopedia of the Quran http://uclibs.org/PID/113653, the WilsonWeb Play Index http://uclibs.org/PID/113654, Alloy Phase Diagram Center Online http://uclibs.org/PID/113611 and the Times Digital Archive http://uclibs.org/PID/112897 Upcoming databases (available soon) are the Latin American database and Rand California

Monographs:

We have run into a snag with the URLs for ECCO (Eighteenth Century Collections Online) which we hope to resolve by the end of May. Sets of this magnitude (130,000 titles) where every campus has a unique URL for each title sometimes take awhile to work out. There is much additional content available on the CRCnetBASE databases which is in the process of being distributed. The series, Lecture notes in computer science, has completed the digitizing of its volumes (back to number 1) and we are now tracking and cataloging them. Upcoming sets for this quarter are the World Bank e-Library and the Working Paper Series from the National Bureau of Economic Research. Plus we will be distributing records for the Naxos Music Library.
