SCP Program Update: December 2002

General news:

New this month are two arts databases and their full-text journals (International Index to Music Periodicals and International Index to Performing Arts). In process are the American Periodical Series (18th and 19th century American periodicals scanned from the microfilm of the same name). If all goes well these records will be distributed by the end of February. (Although not all of the journals have been scanned as of this point). We will also be adding 50 plus open access journals that have been selected for SCP cataloging by the CDC. Our students are back and have been focusing on prep work for journals in the Expanded Academic and American Periodical series databases.

We are working on cataloging the Making of America set (open access) so that it will be ready to go if CDC selects this for cataloging. It has been very interesting to step back to the nineteenth century for this.

We are still awaiting the final word from our programmers as to when we can start distributing SCP records from UCSD (instead of CDL). It is SO close! Some libraries have completed testing for us and all seems to work. When the switch happens we will be putting records up on a server. These can then be taken from us through http.

SCP Program Update: November 2002

Subject: SCP Cataloging Update for November, 2002

General news:

New this month are 47 new JSTOR journals in the Arts and Sciences II collection. There were also a number of Nature specialist journals. Our students (now on vacation until January) have been doing preparation work on Expanded Academic and American Periodical series. January will bring the usual cleanup process of journal cancellations and journal movement between publishers and aggregators.

On the monographic front we are concentrating on bringing IEEE Xplore conference proceedings up to date and are beginning to catalog the back files for the conference proceedings in the ACM Digital Library– around 500 titles. You will be pleased to know that Making of America has been designated for SCP cataloging. This set should be ready in January as we have all but a few of the records (suppressed) in our catalog.

We are still awaiting the final word from our programmers as to when we can start distributing SCP records from UCSD (instead of CDL). At this time I am estimating it will be around mid January, 2003. When this happens we will be putting records up on a server that can be taken from us through http. The records will look exactly like the MARC records that you have received in the past from CDL, with the exception that there will not be any fields stripped out from the records. We are working with the SCP systems liaisons so that your load tables (or its equivalent in non-Innovative libraries) will accomodate records from us.

General news:

New this month are a number of literature journals from JSTOR and LION. In addition we have cataloged an additional 60 titles in the Computer Database and are gearing up to process an additional 500 titles in the Expanded Academic group. On the monographic front, we have finished cataloging the IEEE standards up through 2000 as well as completed the cataloging of the IEEE Xplore conference proceedings through 2000.

We are awaiting the final word from our programmers as to when we can start distributing SCP records from UCSD (instead of CDL). At this time I am estimating it will be around Dec. 16th. When this happens we will be putting records up on a server that can be taken from us through http. The records will look exactly like the MARC records that you have received in the past from CDL, with the exception that there will not be any fields stripped out from the records. More instructions will be sent to the campus systems/cataloging liaisons as the time grows closer.

We will start distributing all the “separate” records for monographs at this point.

General news:

New this month are the CRC journals and databases. In addition we just cataloged the 30 ACM newsletters in the ACM Digital Library. We are presently adding year holdings to the American periodicals series records. As soon as this process is completed we will clone them and send them on. One different thing about these records is the fact that, instead of using the print record as the base for cataloging, we bought an OCLC WorldCat set for the microform records and used these customized records instead. The digitizing of APS is actually based on the microform records, so that the microform notes in the records actually apply to the digital form as well. Therefore campuses that have the microform versions of APS may want to consider just cutting and pasting the URL into their current records. One additional set of records to be cataloged this month are the 34 JSTOR language and literature titles.

General news:

HOTS and SOPAG have endorsed the concept of “separate” records (bibliographic records which contain cataloging information only for the online resource) for monographs.Now we are awaiting further review and input by HOPs, RSC, and CDC before we distribute the records to the campuses. In the meantime, record for these resources are available on MELVYL with UCSD as the “owning” location.Included in this are Lecture notes in computer science, CRCnetBASE handbooks, IEEE Xplore conference proceedings, ACM Digital Library conference proceedings, Oxford reference books online, and Springer LINK book series.

New this month are records for the BioMed Central journals. In addition, we are working on the American Periodical Series journals.In contrast to most serial records which are cataloged based on the print records, this set is being cataloged based on the microfilm version that was used in the digitization process.

General news:

SCP catalogers have completed converting records that linked to the CDL hosted ABI Inform and Computer Databases so that they now link to individual titles in the new ProQuest ABI/Inform Global and the Gale Computer Databases. In addition we are rapidly converting the old MAGS links to Expanded Academic ASAP.We have also just finished the 22 Literature Online (LION) databases. Recently we acquired access to the ACS journal archives so you will be receiving updated records to reflect the extended coverage.

On the monographic front, we have been cataloging masses of conference proceedings. And then they sit… As soon as HOTS and SOPAG have come to a decision as to form of record, we can distribute them to the campuses.

In order for everyone to be better informed as to what SCP catalogers are working on,I created a database on the SCP website at: http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/scp/SCPDatabase.html. All of the monographic packages are listed there, as well as those journal packages on which we are currently working.We will update it frequently.

At the beginning of August, Maria Figueroa was hired in Acquisitions to keep track of additions/deletion to the journal packages for CDL. Her work is greatly appreciated by the catalogers.

SCP catalogers have completed cataloging all the unsubscribed ScienceDirect journals.In addition we have begun work on the PCI full text journals.We are looking into acquiring bibliographic records from ProQuest for EEBO (Early English Books online).This set is enormous–125,000 records.

Under discussion this summer by HOTS (Heads of Technical Services) and SOPAG is the question of just what form monographic records from SCP will take–either single (electronic information including URLs added to the bibliographic record for the print version) or separate (records pertaining only to the electronic version).Until this is resolved, SCP will not be distributing separate monographic records to the campuses.We’re still working on getting the file transfer process set up so that your records will be ftp’d from San Diego weekly, instead of Oakland on a monthly basis.

In the pipeline: National Academy Press monographs (if it is decided to distribute these through SCP); Biomed Central journals.

General news:

Recently CDL signed licenses for access to a number of ProQuest databases with access to begin on July 1st. These will include American Periodical Series online, Acta Sanctorum, PCI Full text (this is 200 new journals), and EEBO (Early English Books online). This last is an online reproduction of the STC microfilm. Fortunately ProQuest will be providing MARC records for this database of monographs.Also this month we have changed the Academic IDEAL access to ScienceDirect. This has, at least until the end of the year, given us access as far back as 1993 on most of the former IDEAL journals. We’re still working on getting the file transfer process set up so that your records will be ftp’d from San Diego weekly, instead of Oakland on a monthly basis.

Again this month there were no new receipts this month in terms of new journal packages– just steady growth on the packages that we currently have. This “hiatus” has allowed us to concentrate on transferring and adding links to the three major A&I databases:Expanded Academic ASAP, Computer Database, and ABI/Inform Global. We also worked on many changes occuring in the Springer LINK platform, adding 25 new titles (and removing 16 which lost full-text). Our Systems and Software Engineering Departments are working on plans to change the file transfer process of SCP records from Oakland to San Diego. There will be more said on this as the date for transferring gets closer.

General news:

New receipts this month were the Marcel Dekker journals and Bepress (Berkeley Electronic Press) journals.The latter group will eventually be 12 titles (currently content is lacking for three). We are continuing to build access to the 3 article catabases: ABI/Inform Global, Computer Database, and Expanded Academic ASAP. We cooperated on cataloging the CJN database, the first time that we are venturing into Chinese language territory. Eventually our CJK unit will begin supplying journal records for 1700 titles included in this database. For California documents, we are adding records for the California Postsecondary Commission electronic resources. I know I’ve said this before — but we are getting close to being able to send monographic records for the IEEE and ACM conference proceedings.

New receipts this month were few.Primarily the Business journals were added to JSTOR and access to four Royal Society journals. This access, coupled with JSTOR access, provides complete electronic runs for the Philosophical transactions (A&B) and the Proceedings (A&B).We also cataloged five titles in CHEMnetBase. We are concentrating on ramping up California government document cataloging.Our whole team underwent a week’s worth of NACO training.
