Information for UC Libraries

Library Print Holdings Data

HathiTrust regularly requests that partner institutions submit data about their print holdings. Print holdings data submissions are a requirement of membership as they are used to calculate annual partner fees and to facilitate legal fair uses, such as access for print disabled users and uses covered by Section 108 of US copyright law.

For RLF holdings: As recommended by the UC systemwide library advisory structure in 2012, the campus where a print holding physically resides will be responsible for reporting that copy. RLF holdings will be submitted by the campus with which the RLF is associated: Holdings for northern campuses housed at NRLF will be reported by UC Berkeley, and holdings from southern campuses housed at SRLF will be reported by UCLA.

Contributing Content to HathiTrust

UC campuses interested in contributing digitized books or serials (bound print materials) to HathiTrust should contact CDL’s Mass Digitization team, who act as the liaison to HathiTrust ingest staff. Materials digitized via the Google Books Library Project or by Internet Archive may flow easily into the HathiTrust repository. However, materials digitized by other vendors or by campuses themselves must be specially prepared for deposit, a process which requires careful navigation. Please refer to these guidelines before contacting CDL.

Building and Managing HathiTrust Collections

CDL can help interested UC libraries create a custom or bulk collection of all their digitized volumes in HathiTrust, or a subset of their collection based on subject or other criteria. CDL can also create a custom search widget for these collections that may be embedded into a web page. A few examples of institutional collections built with the help of CDL include:
