WEST Pilots and Projects

In addition to collaboratively developing, managing, and coordinating the identification, retention, and registration of a shared, distributed collection of print content across libraries, WEST also engages in various pilots and projects to investigate emerging opportunities to support this work.

Current Pilots and Projects

Currently, the WEST Project Team and WEST members are engaged in the following pilots:

HathiTrust, CDL, WEST Pilot to Enhance Shared Print Collaboration Across Libraries

The goal of this pilot is to successfully ingest and make available HathiTrust monographic shared print data in SPDS, a web-based service that currently supports serial shared print workflows for WEST and the University of California Libraries, which will allow the libraries and program staff to track and manage commitments on one platform.

WEST Consulting Services Pilot

For WEST members, considerable value lies in the ability to deselect based on the strength and assurance of the WEST collection. Anecdotally, the WEST Project Team has heard members express that some of the value of WEST is inaccessible since constraints on staff time and lack of expertise can make it difficult to conduct analysis of local holdings compared to WEST holdings when deselection becomes necessary. Helping members tap into that value by providing consulting services to support deselection projects is a strong opportunity for WEST to provide value to members in difficult times.

Completed Pilots

WEST Internet Archive Pilot

In this pilot, WEST tested the feasibility and benefit of coordinating the donation of extra copies of WEST archived serials titles to the Internet Archive for digitization and ongoing access via RapidILL. The pilot capitalized on analytics tools that WEST libraries have invested in and the power of the WEST network of libraries.

ASU Gap Filling Pilot

This pilot project was intended to both increase the completeness of select medium and high risk level (formerly referred to as Silver and Gold) archived titles at ASU through backfile extension and additional gap filling, and gain insight into key questions about the overall value and viability of a dedicated gap-filling project in WEST.
