Using Citation Management Software with UC Licensed Databases

ONLINE SEARCH – Searching an Online Database from within EndNote

Connection files allow you to search and import references from a remote database using your citation management software. The Connect feature is very handy for simple author or title word searches, but for complex searches you should conduct your searches in the native database interface and then export (download) your results into your citation management software.

Begin by clicking the globe to enter Online Search Mode.

In the left panel, select a database to search.

Note: You can do a custom installation of more online search files or download them from the EndNote web site. Online search files are also called “connection files” in EndNote.

Using Online Search mode, references are sent to a temporary EndNote library for preview. After searching, references to keep can be copied to a permanent EndNote library. Use: Copy References to on the References menu or Copy to Local Library button on the EndNote toolbar.

DIRECT EXPORT – Capturing references from searches done in the native database interface

This enables the saving of records directly into EndNote rather than having to save to a file on the desktop and then importing. It saves a few clicks. Examples include: PubMed, Web of Science, BIOSIS, JSTOR & Google Scholar. Methods will vary by publisher; follow the Direct Export instructions provided on the native database interface.
